SR9c Failure to Feed

Just bought an SR9c a few weeks ago. It was my first gun purchase!

I went to the range about a week ago and ran 100 rounds through it. Not a single problem, the gun was amazing and very accurate.

Today I decided to clean,lube it, and run another 100 rounds through it. This time wasn't so great. It was failing to feed properly. This is a picture of basically what it was doing. Note: this is not my Ruger...its a random image from google. http://i.imgur.com/8rUOH.jpg

Any thoughts on why it should jam up like this? Am I bad luber? I did use wheel bearing grease instead of gun lube.

Clean the gun again and this time try using a gun lube very sparingly. If it was a wheel bearing I'd use bearing grease but it is a gun and needs much lighter lube.

Where specifically do you put the lube?

Yeah, bearing grease is too heavy of a lube. RemOil is good stuff, any thin oil like that will work. RemOil has wipes and spray. I let some of the spray get into the internal Fire Control Housing (lightly, not dripping wet) and wipe some onto the rails. I don't oil the chamber, feed ramp or Striker Channel. The Striker gets wiped down as does the feed ramp, any residual oil left is OK, never had an issue with mine.

Could just be the lube's weight, not how you applied it. Could be a combination of the two. First thing though is to switch to a lighter lube, RemOil is just what I use, others have their own personal preference.

Also check your magazines for any burrs or sharp edges or dirt around the feed area. Possibly a mag got dinged while you were cleaning or a burr is catching somewhere. I always cycle a few rounds after cleaning just to be sure everything is feeding as it should.

Ok thanks guys! looks like ill be running to my local gun shop to pick up some lube. Also, jhearne, nice job on the videos. They helped me disassemble my gun today!

Also, is this during shooting or during mag changes? If during shooting, the advice is no different, lube is the culprit I think. If during mag changes, you're likely "Riding the Slide", you want to sling shot it to load the gun. Pull back on the slide and let it go, the gun will do the work, no sense in babying it when it does the same thing when you shoot it. You cause more jams that way (babying it).

It seems to happen the most after I finish shooting through a magazine and then allow the slide to close by pressing the slide release lever. I then dry fire the gun with the magazine loaded. I don't have a ton of gun knowledge but I just thought that leaving it racked, even while unloaded, would put unnecessary stress on the internals of the gun. The next time I try and rack the slide this failure to chamber normally occurs, and I am fully pulling back the slide and releasing it. Upon further examination it would appear that most of the time the firing pin is in the released position and does not retract soon enough to allow the bullet to chamber upon re-racking the slide. This worries me because this is my CC gun and the last thing I want is a problem if I ever need to rack this thing in a hurry. Perhaps I am performing a misstep when I'm done reloading the magazine? Should I not dryfire the gun before storage and leave it racked? Any help would be awesome.

Well to be honest if the gun was functioning correctly it really should make no difference if your chambering the first round with the slide locked back, or releasing it forward after slide lock and your empty, then inserting a new mag and re-racking it.

I've never really heard of anyone storing the sr's with the trigger pulled and firing pin forward, but I have seen a lot of guys with glocks to it this way. Again it should make no real difference or damage the gun in that way either that I know of.

Edit- The only advice I'd give is stop using the slide release lever, its actually a slide stop technically. The difference being its more suited for holding the slide open then using it as a lever to allow the slide forward. But you've probably found that out by seeing how difficult it is to use as a lever. I've heard some say this can damage the gun over time, but not right away I'd think.

Good advise given,let us know how you make out.
Let me add you may chose to polish the feed ramp, could be a small bur. Mothers aluminum polish is great for this and you will be able to buff it too a bright shine, do it by hand, clean the rag regularly, should take you no more than 5 minutes.

Pull your slide of and slip a cartridge up the bolt face and in behind the extractor, there maybe something interfering.

Polish the feed ramp and the breech face. I think that will solve your problem 8)

Had allot of failure to feed problems with my sr9c when I first got it.Found a micro bur on side of feed ramp with my fingernail.Polished the feed ramp with no problems since.

First question which I haven't seen asked yet:

What ammunition was being used when you had the problem?

Incorrectely sized casings can cause the problems you're experiencing.

Then, in no particular order:

When cleaning and lubricating, use oil, not grease, and use is sparingly.

Slingshot your slide when chambering the first round.

Be sure you're not limp wristing.

I realize some of the above has already been suggested.
