SR9 trigger

The trigger on my son's new 9mm SR9 seems a little rough. We have run about 200 rounds through it. Will it smooth out over time or is their something we can sand or polish?

It will get better as you shoot it more, but to speed up the process a fellow RF member, Josh (jhearne) has written a "How-to" that can be found at the top of the Ruger Semi-auto section. It shows polishing you can do from a field stripped pistol and also from a detail stripped pistol. Seems to take the grit out.

Welcome to the forum, Otter - I've learned a bunch about my new SR9 here (including all the potential problems that some have with the gun). Mine's getting smoother the more I shoot it - I also took out the mag. disconnect and did the polishing mentioned above. I have about 300rounds through mine and it's still getting smoother with each range visit - search this site & you'll learn more than you want to know about this gun!

Don't mean to pick on you pvoltmer, but the Ghost SR9 trigger has been vaporware for well over a year now. Search for threads on it, including one from the Ghost honcho.

I found that one of the easiest things to start with is to pull the striker out and clean that channel real well. Also clean the striker itself real good. Then, I like to use a little CLP or something like that does all those magic things it does. Once it builds up, it forms a nice little lube film.

Anyway, I think cleaning that striker channel and assembly up first is a quick and easy way to solve many of the trigger issues related to a gritty-ness. It also wouldn't hurt to clean everything out real well with some spray cleaner (plastic safe of course) and then drip some CLP in the key lube areas. You have to get all of the shipping grease out of there.

Other than that, if you got one with a rough finish, once you get all the grit out, just work it a few times with some extra lube and really work it in.

I've been advised to keep the striker channel free of oil Gunk could easily build up from fouling and even small brass shavings, clogging up the striker channel and causing light strikes. The strength of the SR9's striker spring probably mitigates this significantly, but if you've cut coils from your striker spring to lighten the pull weight, then light strikes could result if your striker channel gets too fouled.

IMHO there are 3 things you can easily do to smooth out the pull besides wasting a bunch of ammo pulling a rough trigger. As you pull the trigger the a tab on the trigger bar pushes up the striker blocker. With some 1000 or even 2000 grit sandpaper smooth the tab and the striker blocker. This alone made a noticeable difference in the feel of my trigger. Next, as the tab on the trigger bar move the striker back then releases it, it slides down the face of the striker tab while the striker is at "full cock". Smoothing the striker tab and trigger bar striker tab (carefully to not round off the sharp edges) also gains a little bit of smoothness. I found that the circumference of the striker itsself was fairly rough, you see it has several large diameter areas that ride in the channel in the slide. I polished these as well. Can't say it made an AHAH! improvement but it is a sliding surface when you pull the trigger so it can't hurt. It's all in Josh's how-to, you can polish more if you want to take it further apart. You can make it a nicer pull with a little work.

They are obviously getting close if you look at their site. They have tutorials on how to change it. I looked for the product on their site and couldnt find it thought.
