A few years ago I picked up a SR 40. I had no use for it but the man needed money. Recently I decided to get rid of it. I find the prices are so low I will put back in the safe!

Why such a bad market? Is it the model or the caliber??

Market saturation I expect, and the fast that it is a 40 isn't in your favor

Your decision to keep it makes sense if you have .40 ammo or just like having it as a backup. It's a capable gun that got unfairly caught in the caliber shift and Ruger's product cycle.

I just bought a .40 S&W M&P2.0 for cheap to use as a sidearm when I'm hog hunting. I'm not comfortable with a 9mm even though everybody says they're just as good. And last week I bought 50 round boxes of Federal factory .40 SW FMJ on clearance for $9.92 per box from Atwoods. I'm set.

A local gun store has a used SR9 in the case for $239. I think the SR series are pretty good guns. I have a 9E and a compact. I'm not sure the store stocks any new .40SW pistols.

Folks continually dismiss the .40 cartridge as a losing proposition.
Just maybe, out West, physics is taught differently.
A 165 grain bullet, at similar velocities as a 124 grain bullet, and with a slightly larger diameter, will always be a better performer, no matter how much new bullet technology is hyped concerning the 9mm. And although new bullet hype is often a discussion factor, the same bullet hype could be equally applied to the .40 as well.
If a feller prefers the 9mm for any reason, so be it. That's okay too. But don't make excuses that somehow the 9mm is a better cartridge. Maybe it's better for ones manicure. ;) 🤣

Conman is so right! My son took his SR40C into a gun shop a few weeks ago and was offered a whole $65.00 for it. He asked the guy if he had had a stroke or something that was affecting him and told him where he could put that offer.
I have a few guns that I hardly ever fire and really don’t need that I would consider selling except that the money that I would gain is so minimal that I’d just rather keep the guns in the safe. Even if I just take them out to hold, and clean occasionally. I hope I am never in a situation where a few hundred bucks would make a real difference in my life.

FWIW (based on what I've read), I think an SR series 9mm "top half" will fit on a comparable SR 40 cal frame, and function fine with a 9mm SR mag in the magwell (and 9mm ammo tennds to be cheaper). Lots of used pistol "parts kits" on GunBroker, for anyone (like me) who values 'convertible' firearms that can handle multiple calibers! Plus, the Ruger PCC carbine can use SR mags (with the SR magwell installed), and I've discovered that used 9mm SR mags are often cheaper than 9mm Glock mags.

As always IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc., etc...
:)

I used to be anti 40 for years.
Then I looked at what the cartridge itself will do.
The 40 is a butt kicker.
If I run into a deal on an sr40, I'll buy it.
I own a 9e and sr45 already.

In that same trail of thought, I own a s&w SD 40 and two sd9's.
