SR1911 front sight moved Ruger replaced entire slide!

Hey guys new to the forum. Not really been reading it for quite a while but never felt a need to post before this. I own several Ruger products a LCR, GP100, SR1911CMD and my wife's LC9. We bought these because Ruger has always given the best customer service.

To my point. Two weeks ago I took my SR1911 to the range and ran about 100 rounds through it. I noticed that I shot it better to begin with than I did later. I figured I was getting impatient, and not using proper finger trigger location. When I got home and started cleaning the pistol I noticed the front sight has drifted over to the left side. I think if I had of tried I could have pushed it off with my fingers.

I contacted Ruger they sent me the label, great CS as usual! 7 days later I got it back. The invoice said slide assembly replaced and grip safety repaired. I had not mentioned the grip safety to them, but I am glad they did the work on it I hated that little rattle it had. I was surprised that they put a new slide assembly on the pistol I was expecting them to use some type of locite and put the sight back on. Does anyone know the reason for them to replace the entire slide? Not that it really bothers me, but the finish is slightly different from the frame now, where before they matched near perfect.

Welcome to the forum. Just a guess but maybe the dovetail for the sight was too far out of spec to fit in a new one.

I contacted Ruger via their website. They got back to me late yesterday. You are correct they said "No, it is not common that we would replace the entire slide for a sight issue. In his case the sight was loose inside the dovetail cutout and could not be repaired, which is why we had to replace the entire slide."

I took the time to research the moving sight on the SR1911, and found where several were like mine, and Ruger replaced the entire slide, and others that the sight was just either replaced or reinstalled. It makes me wonder if it was a particular run of the slides that had bad tooling.

I shot the gun today, operated perfect. I am very pleased.

One can buy all the CNC machinery which will fit into their building, but none of it will ever replace hand fitting stuff which needs hand fitted.
That, and being a trained button-pusher does not make one a machinist. I've known too many CNC "operators" who couldn't read a micrometer (or even do simple math) to believe otherwise.

So having to replace an entire slide due to a bad dovetail cut?....no, that don't surprise me at all.

Maybe, maybe not...who knows?.....Or it could be that instead of getting loose, the front sight blade simply shears-off and leaves it's base behind, which itself, is not an uncommon scenario for a SR1911.

But hey, like you said, Ruger has great customer service...so the worse that can happen is that they'll keep fixing it. :lol: .

I know that they has a problem with them shearing off. I was under the impression that they had that worked out, It seems like most of the talk about that issue was pre 2014. I did some target practice with it yesterday, just 30 rounds. She is back to very accurate. I didn't see any movement on the front sight. I hope all is good. Having to keep sending it back to Ruger would get old after a while. It would have to hit Armslist if it comes to a constant problem.
