I just picked up my second SR1911 CMD today. The front sight has been modified. It has the same profile but ,on the sides, instead of having that little dished out area to make the forward portion of the blade thinner than the rear, the sides have a flat taper to them. Definitely a design change without affecting the overall look or sight picture.
This gun has a test cartridge envelope dated 3/7/14. Looks like Ruger is getting tired of replacing front sights and is doing something about it.
I have had zero problems with my other two. :D :D :D

Sure am glad to hear that about the front sight an all. Enjoy your new found friend- :D Are ya gonna get a double shoulder carry rig for your 1911 ????? Anyway stay safe and have fun !!!

DaveShooter , Thanks, My house gun has been a P95 9mm for some time but I shoot my 1911`s at the range a lot (besides my revolvers) It really don`t make sense to Practice with one gun and rely on another for defense due to the fact that the safety`s on them operate opposite of one and another. After brake in it will live in the house with a mag full of good stuff.

chuck,

your post made me take a closer look at my front sight on my 5" pistol.

the post does not have any taper on the sides, it just goes straight down till it meets the base.

also the sight blade does not touch the slide (only at the cut for the base), there is an equal length space between the bottom of the sight and slide. I don't know if it is the newer type sight or not.
I'm pushing a 1000 rounds and the little bugger is still in place.

I bought my pistol in april and the test fired casing is dated 2/19/14.

The taper I speak of is from the rear to the front of the sight. My older one (the 5")
has concave sides what I call a divot to thin the sides to make the front portion thinner than the rear. My CMD has a straight taper to it. It definitely (if cast) came from a redesigned mold. Better?? I don`t know??

from what I can gather we both have the new machined front sight.

should mine ever break it will go straight to novak's for an upgrade.
i'll be getting the same type of set up as is on there now, minus the three dot feature.

as a matter of fact, I blacked out the dots on mine with a birchwood casey flat black pen.

just works better for me...

I don`t care for the dots either. They don`t bother me but they just get ignored due to the fact I cant focus on them. I would be better off without them and will most likely black them out also.
That said, I have a pair of Novak fronts I bought from Ruger when I first heard there was an issue with the sight. So far they are doing fine. They can live in the parts box until the day they are needed.

Me and my 15 year old son put 186 rounds (I know, odd number but that's how many I had loaded) through the SR1911 CMD with the new Novak front sight. No issues, not one single failure of any sort, just tedious reliability.

Spent the better part of the afternoon loading up another 300 rounds consisting of a 225 grain flat point and 4.1 grains WST over a CCI LPP. We'll send those down range next Friday.

My take away from today's shoot is the SR1911 is BORING. You load it, you place the sights on target, gently squeeze trigger and a bullet lands where your sights were pointed.

Not even so much as a single jam to make things interesting.

CMD with tapered front-to-rear flat sided front sight. Test case date 2014/01/14.
