SR1911 broken front sight

I think you'll like the new sight. I'll be honest, I've never been a fan of fiber optics. I opted for it only because Ruger did not have another option with a white dot to match the rear sights. I basically told them ANYTHING, but the standard MIM factory sight. As it turns out, it's no where near as gaudy as some of the other fiber optics I've seen. I like it so far and as long as it holds out, I'll be keeping it instead of getting the Heinies.

I haven't cared for fiber optic sights either because they are sometimes fragile. But I like those. They are probably more durable than the OEM front sights that have a reputation of breaking off. I would choose the same option......fiber optic front sight.

Brian48; two questions.
1. Did they alter the crown of the slide behind the dove tail to accommodate the rear portion of the site?
2. Where did you get the Radical Concepts grip? Got mine for the SR 1911 over a year ago to match-up with the factory grip on my Colt. They won't last forever and I'd like to get a couple of back-ups.
Thanks

I don't believe they modified the slide at all for this new sight. Not that I can tell anyway.

Got the grips new off eBay a while back. They pop up periodically.

Took my ruger 1911 to the range today and had shot about 20 rounds when after one shot looked down the barrel and saw the front sight had snapped off. Came home and called Ruger and they are sending me a shipping label to send gun in to be repaired. The young lady at Ruger was very pleasant. Sending it in tomorrow.

I installed one (from Ruger) myself. I trimmed just a bit off the bottom rear surface of the sight. I'm not about to alter the slide so a $35 sight will fit.

Just doing some early research on nite sights for my SR1911. We're occasionally shooting dim back-lit targets in total darkness. My XDM 40 w/ trijicon HD's work well on these, but otherwise normally use the 1911. My understanding is that in addition to honing to fit the Ruger dovetail cut that the slide crown [radius] needs to be flattened a tad for a proper fit. There is not enough metal on these below the tritium tube to trim. For comparability I'd like the same sites, but at this point I'm open to consider other options.

If you go to Heinie's website, they have sights specifically for the SR1911. The assumption is that these do not need further modifications to the slide.

I guess I'm in the club now too. Just picked up a used SR1911 CMD on Thursday. It was test fired at the Ruger factory in May 2013. It was originally bought by a local LEO, who also happens to be a certified 1911 armorer.

The original owner had a front sight shear off, and Ruger sent him another one to install. When the second sight sheared off, he sent the gun back to Ruger and they replaced it with the third identical sight. The owner also replaced nearly all the MIM parts with stainless aftermarket parts.

The original owner put a couple of hundred rounds through the gun, with the 3rd sight, with no problems. I got the gun on Thursday and took it to the range this morning. On my 14th shot, the front sight disappeared.

I guess I will be on the phone with Ruger on Monday.

This is how it looked on Friday:

And this is what it looks like today:

Now that is a lot of shipping costs sunk down the drain for just one gun. Between this and the rust issues, I wonder how much this has eaten into the company's bottom line. Seems to me that they should have just cut their losses and trashed all the factory sights in favor of something else (anything else).

When you get it back, the repair order will say that it has in all caps LIGHT SCRATCHES SLIDE & FRAME, that was total bs with my SR1911 till I got it back, then it had the light scratches on the slide & frame, I sure it was repaired on the Friday after it made the trip to Ruger, they wanted me to send it back again so they could fix the scratches and adjust the front sightso it will hit what I aim it at, at that time I told them, they will never see any of my firearms for any reason, I'm still just a bit on the over heated sideon this.

I sent mine in to get the sight replaced and they told me that they had been trying to do the fiber optic sight but it required modification due to the Novak cut they used. I don't know if that is something true or bs but they did say they were going to put a heavier sight on it. And they were going to replace the slide due to it being scratched up (which it was somewhat from putting the first replacement on when I did it). They said it would be at no charge due to the sight problem. I'm hoping it comes back soon. Does anyone have any time frame that it normally takes to get it back?

You're the first I've heard of. Did you bang up against something and not realize it? Ruger doesn't make these sights as far as I know. Still strange that it would just fall off without any help. Thanks for information.

The same happened to me. No careless handling.
Took a shot, came up to take a 2nd and the front sight was missing.
Ruger sent me a replacement but I put Novak Night sites on instead

Do you have the part numbers? Did you have to modifie the slide? Or were they a direct fit? Thanks

Got mine back yesterday (would have gotten it a day earlier if we had been home). So it took just over a week to send and then receive. I am now happy and went out last night and put at least 100 rounds through it. I love shooting my SR1911CMD. I had a blast.

What sight did they install?

I shipped mine yesterday; it is supposed to arrive at the factory today.

Unless you specifically ask for something else, they return the gun back to you with the same factory sight.
Yes, I am aware of that. I have had that conversation with Ruger CS.

I was asking accessbob what sight was installed on HIS gun.

I asked for teh Fiber Optic.......................They put the same junk on that the gun came with, not at all happy Ruger CS at this time, and I won't send it back to they for any work again.

Witnessed it in person tonight, gentleman shooting the local steel challenge match with his SR1911 Commander model. 3rd shot of a five shot string sight snaps off at the base. No rough handling just recoil snapped it off. He was unaware of the history on the front sight issue. He is going to replace it with fiber optic, told him Ruger will fix it but he will get the same factory sight back, pretty sure he is sour on that idea right about now.

Shoot straight and shoot often
GF

I don't know why he would not get the fiber optic from Ruger. The replaced the sight that broke off my comander and they also sent a fiber optic for the goerment model I have and they sent them 2nd day air all on their dime Ruger cs is excellent as long as you are not a total a hole to them

Just got SR 1911 Cmdr back from Prescott... Sheared off sight when shooting... Returned with a factory sight.... Customer Service was good... 7 day turn around.. We'll see how long this one last

My 2nd sight sheared off AGAIN after only 120+ rds or so. Sent it back again and got the fiber optic this time around. So far, it's held up, but I have not shot it as much lately though.

My sight just broke today...my cmd is custom cerakoted i hope they don't scuff the finish!

The sights must have been removed then reinstalled to do the cerakote, I hope Ruger doesn't use this as a way out of fixing yours. I think I would want higher quality sights installed, if I carried it for protection. Let us know how you make out. Ed

Hello, I know this post has been around for quite a while but I found it while searching for this subject.

Had my front sight shear at ~1000 rounds give or take. Was in the middle of a 200 round plinking string when it disappeared.

I won't be returning it to Ruger, I ordered an oversized MGW sight blank from Brownell's and will fit and shape it.

I know "stuff happens" but this is the first time I've ever lost a front sight on a semi-auto.
