Awhile ago I bought some new speer primed brass in .454 Casull. I noticed a small line of some kind of glue/sealant on the inside of the brass just below the mouth. Any idea of what it is and where I can buy it?
I'm pretty sure this material is to keep the bullet in place longer to aid in consistent ignition. Lee Jurras mentioned that he used this technique when loading H110/WW296 under his 180gr JHPs in Super Vel .44 Mag ammo. Side benefits would certainly include preventing crimp jump and acting as a sealant. I don't know where you can get the material. You could call Speer, although I think it might be real messy and hard to apply consistenly by an individual.
Several years ago, I bought 500 of those same Speer Primed .454 cases from Midway for right at $100 delivered. They drove me crazy at first (until I noticed the sealant) the cases would seize up on the expander/powder funnel on my Dillon 550. I solved the problem by using the .44 Mag powder funnel.
Loaded with 300gr Horn XTP Mag HPs and H110, they shoot real good in my 6" FA83 FG -- center group (shot from rest with 4x Leupold to verify previous groups).
Nice target! I posted for that exact same reason. I have loaded just about every .454 brass avaliable and the speer brass gave outstanding accuracy. The only reason I could come up with was the ring of sealant on the brass. It messed up my expander die as well until I figured it out. Wish I could buy more...
