sp101 or snakes???

Good to leave some bad snakes alone, keep the population up- keeps some bad guys away.

Years ago I got a ten pack of CCI .44 shotshells.Shot three at camp, patterned.
That 44 has gone countless miles through the Florida Wildland snake country.Got seven shotshells left.

figured I throw in a word or two... I started using the shot loads in 22 lr, 22mag, 38's and 357's in the mid '70's. the 22lr are a bit weak so it may take two. the 22mag are a bit stronger so they work well. the 38's are used in a 2" chief or a 4" 686. the 22mag are out of an old high standard derringer. the 44's are from a 6 1/2" m29 or a 4 5/8" saa. Last big moccasin I had in the back yard was hit twice with the 38's cause he was big and I was close and we had the church youth group (young teens). I sent them in the house and did my job. btw, the 22's are from a 6" k22 so they have a bit of barrel to travel, do not center the shot cause the pattern is a bit like a donut (hole in center, tell that to a bullseye shooter??). the 2" and the 4" are the better lengths to use. I live at a lake in N Texas so I usually do not wonder around with a .410. 0r 20 ga., I slip the pistol in my pocket so it's a little less noticeable by noisy neighbors. last copperhead was in the garage, dropped a 4' length of 4 + 4 lumber. he was too close to shoot, didn't have a gun, did have a piece of lumber though... did buy shot loads in 9mm, 40 s&w and 45 acp but have not used any but the 9, worked good in glock w/ polygonal bore. 40 and 45 are too big in shot size for my tastes. I load my own in 38 and 44 though. I try to keep small shot for that. size 9 shot is almost small enough. 10 - 12 are better. it saturates the area and intensifies the destruction with one shot.

I used some of the blue capsule shotshells in 45 colt and they totally stunk for pattern. Literally need to be a foot away to get any shot on target. Not impressed with the idea at all. With all the varied answers try some out yourself. My guess is alot of these guys are quick to answer and short on actual usage of shotshells based on using a couple hundred of these to see what they can do, as I recieved a bunch of them along with a Uberti Cattleman and a bunch more ammo in trade for a ratty old aluminum boat.

Sorry to hear that you've had such bad luck. I've used CCI shotshells in .22LR, .22WMR, .357, .44 mag and .45LC. I find the norm as far as patterns go is around 18" at 6-10 feet. (And there's no need to be any farther away for testing IMO) The .22LR is marginal, but the others are pretty hard to beat, and I've done a LOT of tinkering (for the sake of tinkering  ) with homegrown shotshells with #8 and #6 shot....(Not with capsules but with "wads") I too think barrel length plays a part but my 7.5" .45 BH works fine at the range mentioned, as did a 10" .44 FT I once owned...

Bottom line...Get closer?

CCI for me...

JMHO

(BTW Sheriff 54, my .22 WMR HS derringer is a fine snakestopper too and fits handily in a pocket... )

That's right.........get closer!! Emergency Room standing by!!

Why not profile our snake hatred on national 'hunt' shows??

My special recipie calls for filling the capsuls with #4 shot then I have some #12 shot that I shake it to fill all the extra space. I have killed a few from 5-15 feet and it literally will stop them cold in their tracks. By this I mean no wiggling around and coiling in pain----just stopped dead. The other advantage is that with small shot it does not tear them up so you can still skin them without holes showing. No that was not a typo on the #12. I found a bag at a garage sale many years ago. I have never seen it anywhere since. It looks just like sand but sure weighs a bunch more.

Was at a gun show today, saw an Ithaca 22 lever action single shot-brought back childhood memories-camping in the Everglades, buddy had an Ithaca Lever 22.I clearly recall the snake takes,Tamiami canal. The shots involved water,I still make splashes, luckily outgrew wanton snake blast.

Water snakes taste........fishy.

Back in the Ithaca lever 22 days we didn't give much thought to 'snake load'.
A pocket full of routine ammo, likely purchased at Sears filled the bill.
The fancier 22 shot shells were not here yet, just the crimped case version but I don't recall employing shot.We were good shots, and the targets usually beyond effective shot load anyway.

I don't feel there is really much to custom snake loads, given all the different ammo available today.I imagine Judge 410 could be ideal for some. For me,I would rather stuff all cylinders with 240 grain solids.........

I can be wrong herE and am sure I will be brought to task very shortly but from what I have read,no personal exp, the Judge really doesn't pattern that well even at close range. Again you guys that own them know better but that is what I have read.

I'm in agreement with the last statement in that link, ie something bigger (as in something starting with at least a .3) for something at least bigger than the first snakes shown. Btw, the picture of the huge one is surely a hoax as it looks to measure 9 or 10 feet! Don't think so - or hope not :) I'm thinking maybe one of those South American python/boa types that have been let loose by their idiot Florida owners and causing the state grief?

Speaking of calibers starting with .3, it's long past time for CCI to come out with .32 H&R Mag shot. Yes, I know (and have heard as much from them) "not enough demand." Well, maybe with the advent of the .327 that'll change. Like the other two major CCI pairings, the H&R can be shot in both and is a real no-brainer now. (And yes, I also know,"brew your own." Tell the missus that.)

Enough well said.
