Just got my new sp101 DAO for my 21st today!!! I am trying to figure out if I want to put new wood grips on it, or possibly just inserts. Anyone have advice for me???

I tried a few different grips on mine and always went back to the factory ones.

Have you shot it very much?
The factory grips are pretty nice. I like mine with the factory grips.

When i replace the grips I will go with the Crimson Trace laser grip since i can't see iron sights very well anymore........... :D

Here's my suggestion: if you want concealablity, get the Badger boot grips. I got some in walnut, and they look great.

Check out the first picture in this thread. Looks just like mine but I haven't had my gun polished yet. http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=95158&highlight=

I will say, you can feel the recoil, but you should be able to handle it. I'm 21, too, and I have no problems with it.

Out of these three SP101s the Hogue Rubber were the most comfortable to shoot & cost the least..

There's a thread at the other Ruger Forum were a guy sells the inserts in various woods.. Look here..

There are several different other manufacturer's making SP101 grips such as Eagle, Trausch, NOS Uncle Mikes, Hogue, Badger & also Gemini Customs has some super sweet custom grips too..

I have Hogue rubber grips on both of my SP101's. They keep my middle finger from banging up against the back of the trigger guard.

Me too. But I would add this ~ if you're going to conceal carry the gun, my experience is that factory grips are best ~ if you're gonna plink with it at the range and use full house .357 loads, try Trausch grips.

I've tried most of the options out there. For concealing go with the Badgers or the Eagles for open carry or shooting for entertainment go with the Trausch. They are far and away the most comfortable.

Hey, I recognize that SP101!

I like the Badgers and I also have another SP101 and it wears a set of Uncle Mike's boot grips. In my opinion, the Uncle Mike's were the best grips made for the SP, compact and easy to conceal and the rubber isn't tacky like the Hogues so they won't stick to your clothes.

I'll add my vote to the factory grips as well. I consider one of the attractions of the SP101, specifically the snub-nose version, to be it's smaller frame size and carry ability. Unless you just want to change the grip inserts, most of the other complete grip changes I see made just increase the profile size of the gun. I sometimes consider changing my grip inserts, but have so far remained with the factory grips.

One of the first modifications you may want to consider is smoothing off the sharp edges on that trigger and trigger guard. Especially on the trigger, it can cut into your finger a bit.

When I had my SP101 I found the Hogues were best for range use and/or shooting full house loads. Pachmayr Compacs offered a good compromise between comfort and concealability. The factory grips were pretty much useless to me because they positioned my middle knuckle in the perfect spot for a trigger guard beating.

^^^ This! :x

The factory grips though small enough for concealed carry does give the middle finger against the trigger guard a good beating..
You'd think they'd come out with a grip shaped like the Hogue LCRs.. In fact I'd bet with some fitting they could be made to work, might have to drill & tap a screw hole in the bottom of the grip tang.. Hmmmm??? HaHa!! I Wonder??
