SP101 grip recommendations

I bought a SP101 .357 today, and I wanted to see what options those of you who have changed the grips have chosen. I am looking at Altamont's site, but I didn't know if there were other grips than the Ruger style which have worked well for some of you. (The OEM grips aren't bad...just looking for options.)

Best grips for shooting I had were Trausch. Not worth a darn for carrying 'cause they're a little larger than factory and pretty sticky. May be hard to find though as the company owner recently passed away and some say they're in short supply.

I kept the original grips on mine and changed out the black plastic panel. Anything else and the firearm isn't as concealable.

I did the same. A lot of people don't care for them, but the original grips work great for me.

I dont mind the factory grips, but i dont favor them.

The hogue grips rubber are extremely comfortable to shoot but if concealing the gun they will grab the shirt a bit.

I have the rubber Crimson Trace grips on now. There are two models, the cheaper model is a little smaller in size and harder. I have the slightly larger set they have a little more grip but do not grab clothing like the hogues. They are IMO perfect for the SP. Allow you to have a good, solid, firm grasp on the gun but they are not big. And not to mention the laser. Allows for faster target alignment and will shoot where the dot is. When i shot the gun i use the laser and sights together,but then ill normally shoot a handfull of rounds from the hip one handed to simulate a draw from the jacket pocket or holster.

Ive never tried out any of the wooded custom type grips, but them dangs things sure can be pretty

I do like the look of the wooded inserts.

One problem I have on this SP101 (and something I have noticed on other Ruger revolvers) is that the grip screw and the round metal inserts (whatever they are called?) that the screw goes into have very sharp edges. I need to file them down, I suppose. i wonder if anyone makes an allen head grip screw? I sure do like them on 1911s, versus the slotted head screws.

I was thinking last night (something I try to do once a day, if possible) that maybe one option would be to use a grip sleeve over these grips...like of the grip sleeves made for the LCP...that would give me a little more grip and cover up the screws. I wonder if they make a sleeve for the SP101 grip, or if a grip sleeve for a LCP would stretch over the SP101 grip?

Of course, then I couldn't use any pretty wood inserts.

Check out badger grips. Very concealable.

I put a set of the Crimson Trace laser grips on mine. There are two different models. I recommend the rubber overmold ones and not the polymer ones.
They are a little larger than the original grips but they've got good feel to them and are comfortable shooting.

Do you care about function or appearance? Carry or not?
My SP with the factory grips shot lousy (I shot lousy). Switching to the Hogue (either the nylon or rubber; nylon won't snag a shirttail) made a world of difference because my hands are large. Now the only thing more accurate is my GP with the Hogue grip.

I won't carry my Sp101...at least not on-body. It will go with me in the car, or in the den when we watch TV. I do consider appearance, but it isn't the primary consideration. I have small hands, so the stock grip fits fairly well...I can pretty much get a full grip on it. I have looked (online) at the Hogue monogrips, and it looks like they might be a better fit. I just can't get the pretty wood inserts for them! :wink:

Those are the same grips I put on my SP101. I didn't much care for the factory plastic inserts. They look cheesy.

These are the two I like best on my SP. Hogue rubber for range, Gemini customs for conceal. Both feel great, shoot great for me. Please excuse pics, were cropped from multi pistol shots.

I decided to buy a set of hand carved inserts that I found on eBay (pictures when I get them) for nice, and buy the Hogue grips from Midway for general use.

Check out badger grips. Very concealable.

I have a set of Badger Grips on my SP101. they fit my hand very well and conceal very well. I have spoken with Jim Badger he is a Great guy and a true craftsman at his trade and he backs up his Grips 100%.Well worth the Investment.

I really like these. I may need a couple of pair. The factory grips are just absolutely too small to be comfortable. I'd love to find a couple more pair of Trausch grips.

Doesnt the soft sticky rubber grips cause clothes to stick to them? I'm just asking due to hopefully IL will be getting their ccw this year. I'm planning on makiing my sp101 my carry gun. I currently have wood hogues on it but that makes it alot larger than the originals.

My factory grips don't feel sticky either. Shirt or jacket don't seem to catch on them. I tried the Hogue mono grips and although they work well for range shooting or night stand duty, they're not for CC. They're to big and tend to stick out plus all my shirts and jackets catch on them.
