At the ceremony of lying in state of President Bush, someone noted that he was the "last World War II veteran who could serve as President of the United States."

Of 44 US presidents, 26 have been military veterans, most on up until Eisenhower were Army veterans, since then most have been Navy veterans.

Our Government has been very careful to separate the military from the civil government, and rightly so, but sure appears to have drawn heavily on their experience.

President GWH Bush had a Distinguished Flying Cross, and no one ever heard about it. There was unending reporting about McCain being a POW, but nothing about Bush being a war hero.
He had a Presidential Unit Citation too, and I did not know that he had either one until today. I did not like President Bush much, but I can't argue against his courage as a pilot.

The last two Veteran Presidents were both military pilots.
Geo H. W. was the youngest to fly combat in the Navy. He was 18 when he received his Wings Of Gold.
We in Texas had two back to back Governors which were both military pilots Gov. Geo W. Bush and Gov. Perry

GHW was very lucky to be rescued. The ones taken prisnor on the Island were not so lucky.

Bush flew several miles from the island, where he and one other crew member bailed out; the other man's parachute did not open. Bush waited for four hours in an inflated raft, while several fighters circled protectively overhead, until he was rescued by the submarine USS Finback. For the next month, he remained in Finback and participated in the rescue of other aviators. Several of those shot down during the attack were executed, and their livers were eaten by their captors. This experience shaped Bush profoundly, leading him to ask, "Why had I been spared and what did God have for me?"
