A couple of years ago I stopped to take a break and had a feeling I was being watched. This little fellow was only a few feet away.

That is wonderful! We have had cottontails here lately. The other week this little critter and I watched each other for a while:
Then last week we had another visitor of a different type on the patio, the last I saw it had taken off into the grass in the front yard:

Good shot! I found a 'charlie no shoulders' in my side yard while cutting my grass. He took off before I could get down and put him into the back flower bed so he could be a vole eater. First black snake I have seen in almost a year. Rabbits are everywhere lately.
I know what you mean about snakes(the vast majority of them), they are welcome here at this place to go about their merry eating pests, plus snakes are just attractive and cool animals!
