Was at the range this morning dialing in my stepson's 308 and a buddy's 270 Ruger MK2. Got it on paper at 100 with some cheap Federal powershocks then switched to Hornady Custom. Started getting frustrated when I couldn't get better than 2.5" groups. Finally on a whim I switched back to the powershocks and instly my groups tighted to about an inch. I'd have never thought that would have happened.

I tend to judge a gun by its ability to shoot 'cheap' ammo. If I can't find a handload that works, I try at least one Remington green box load. I've never had a gun not shoot decently with the Remington stuff.

My Hawkeye 30-06 loves the 150gr Corelokt ammo. So much so that I have no reason to shoot anything else in it.

Along about 1994, I picked up a Browning Safari built on the small ring Mauser w/pencil barrel. The barrel had been floated. My intent was to turn the little gem into either a .270 or .280. I bought a box of red box (at the time) cheap Federal 150s and tried it. Several three shot groups of 3/4" or less soon convinced me to forget the new barrel and I went back and bought 10 more boxes of that ammo. It still shoots cheap Federals just fine. Could be their Lake City Arsenal experience??? jack

My experience is that every gun and every barrel is an individual. That is one reason why I handload rifle ammunition. That way I can experiment and find exactly the right load for each one.

I've got three guns that love the cheap Federal "blue box" ammo. Not only are they accurate but they knock down the game pretty darn good too. Shhhush, don't tell anyone, Federal Powershocks are a quite the bargain.

Federal makes good ammo, No matter the price. If the rifle shoots it well, the deer won't know the difference. I don't think there is any CHEAP rifle ammo, made in the USA anymore.
