Haven't had time to really shoot it much, but I am really excited about this one!

Nice, does it sort of resemble a Mini-30? Looks like it would be fun at the range.
It's the short version of an M1A, so yes it 'sorta' looks like a Mini, or is it that the Mini sorta looks like it? :) I like mine, other than the immense muzzle flash right up in front of the sights it's great.

Those rifles are a lot of fun. I used to own one of the SOCOM IIs with the quad rail on the front, but sold it after I bought an AR-10. I think you made the right choice in skipping the quad rail. It didn't do much beyond add weight out on the front of the rifle and scrape off skin when I wasn't careful. Besides, there's almost no way anyone would use all of that rail space. Better to put a small section of rail just where you need it.

Anyway, the rifle itself shot well and was very reliable. The muzzle break they put on those SOCOMs is really effective. I put a red dot sight on mine, but it always bothered me that there was no way to cowitness the red dot with the iron sights. Note that if you want to add any sort of optic, the stock design makes it necessary to abandon your cheek weld. Instead you're left with sort of a 'chin' weld. My advice to you is to just use the iron sights that the stock is designed for (they're excellent iron sights anyway). Have fun with the new gun!

I've seen pictures of soldiers who are using the M14 with optics, who have a big pad duct taped to the top of the comb of their stock to maintain cheek weld. You could probably do something like that. Just say it's "tactical tape", not duct tape...

Congratulations! That is a nice weapon. I bought a loaded model from a friend but haven't
had time to take it to the range yet. Have been stocking up on ammo though.

You'll love your SOCOM 16,I have an M1A " LOADED' and it's one shootin thing. It's a bit on the heavy side but it shoots SUB M.O.A. groups at 100 yards with loads it likes and a scope on it .Your SOCOM should come close to that and it's a whole lot lighter than my M1A.
Congrats and enjoy.
