I bought the CDM because I like the balance of it, 3 less ounces on the end of the barrel. I used to have CMD`s many years ago and as I said I always liked the balance and the looks. Now I'll have some full sized also since I`m getting back to 1911`s [ I haven`t owned them in 25 years]

If it's just a pure range gun, the full size is probably the way to go.
I bought the CMD and prefer it because I find I lose nothing in function and accuracy over the full size but it is a bit easier to wear on the hip when I'm driving in my car (which I do in the winter here in N.E.).
Pictured is a Blackhawk but recently I switched to an Uncle Mike's Tactical Reflex and that's what I carry it in all the time now.

They both conceal about the same and the extra 3/4" in the full size really makes no discernible difference in accuracy, but what really counts is how they feel in your hands...balance and pointability, big points in a defensive handgun. All that said, both are heavier than an anchor for all day carry. My son #2 built me a beautiful shoulder rig with a dual mag carrier on the other side, that seems to mitigate the weight. Belt holsters, OWB types work OK but I'd not like to tote one all day long, and I've never wanted to redo my wardrobe to accommodate an IWB.
I have both of the Rugers, like them a lot but do not carry them on a regular basis. In quality, both are well worth the money...locally here in Louisville, KY, you can find them for +-$650 -$700. In the examples that I have, they've been just about 100% reliable...failing only when I seated some LSWC's too long. Again, in the examples I have, their parts are interchangeable with Colt Series 70 guns. I think of them as almost perfect with regards to features, adding only that I'd like to have tritium night sights on them and a checkered front strap...of course at the same price.
Some here, call them overpriced entry level guns, but my experience has been outstanding with accuracy that's as good as my Colts with Wilson barrels and bushings.
Were it me making the choice, I'd go with the CMD's shorter barrel, but only because the Commander balances better in my hands and consequently, I shoot it better. Come to think of it, with all Ruger's experience with aluminum alloy gun making, I'd hope they'd put out a true Lt. Weight Commander of their own. I'll be first in line if they do!

I think the problem with concealing is the weight and length of grip, the length of the barrel doesn`t matter much especially 3/4 of a inch...IF a gun is to heavy and bulky many find reasons not to carry it...But if it weighs under 23 ozs and a single stack... I have the CMD. and I have a S&W Shield I love both guns but the Shield is the carry gun...you hardly know it's there...plus a 1911 does a lot of printing which can be problem depending where you live..
The Commander length is just a bit better for CCW. Years ago I carried a LW Colt Commander (with ivories, no less) for work. Loved that gun. It always worked, shot well, and was very quick handling. If Ruger would make one with an alloy frame I would be all over it. It would be a good idea to make it with a steel feed ramp, though.

I have and like both, the only time I can tell a difference is when sitting in a vehicle the 4.25" doesn't hit the seat, but I do carry the Government model the most.

I have a 5 in and love it, not going to carry either one, much too heavy and I am not that worried. I carry the lcp when I feel the need, but I enjoy shooting and playing with the 1911.

Ruger is one of the BEST investment casting companies in the business. I have seen other alloy framed commander 1911s and I KNOW Ruger could easily do this! Using their existing machining and tooling at that. I would buy one of these in a heartbeat! No more frame rust under the grips! Lol
