smoothbore?

This is an inherited gun, unknown history. Is this a factory mod, an aftermarket mod, or just a shot-out barrel? ....hmmm....can anyone teach me to attach images?

If it is a true smooth bore and the barrel length is under 18" and the overall length is less than 26" there is considerable risk of trouble with the BATFE unless the tax has been paid and it has been registered.

What kind of gun is it? There are smooth rifles out there that left the factory that way.
Many .22 birdshot guns were produced back before the 68 gun control act and like
ADP3 said it would have had to be registered if the barrel is shorter than 18". If not registered and it were mine, I would either re barrel, sleeve it ,part it out or scrap it.
It would take an act of congress and many $$$ to make it legal today if even possible.

Some bores have a POLLYGONAL (sp?) type rifling that looks almost like a smooth bore. I`d check that possibility.

It could be a C&R also and no paper work needed. Kinda like all the 14" barreled trapper lever actions that were made before a certain year. Or how some some Lugers and Hi Powers can have the stock attached.

Without knowing what you have, we can't help, only speculate.

I inherited an old Winchester .22 rifle model 1890 which had been in my family for three generations. (It was born in 1901.) The barrel was completely shot out showing only a faint trace of rifling and that only after a lot of cleaning. At first inspection you would swear it was a smooth bore. At only 25 yards the bullets were hitting the target completely tumbled sideways.

I replaced the barrel (easy to do) with a new manufacture barrel and it now shoots pretty good.
