Time is linear. Nothing else is truly linear.

...but some powders are more linear like than others, Power Pistol comes to mind as one.
 
Actually think most powders are nearly linear in the range that we us them. That is, between the minimum and maximum loads listed.

Well, dunno about being a liberal. That, I sure as hell ain't. :x However I do know about powders being linear within certain parameters.

Smokeless powder depending upon their burning rate are linear within, as I said certain parameters. This holds true regardless if it's a fast burner like Bullseye or a slow poke like H5010.

Let's do a hypothetical load work up with a powder I'll call "X" Min load is sat 30.0 gr. and max 40.0 gr. Staring with 30.0 gr. you get FPS2000, 31.0 gr. 2050 FPS, 32.0 gr. 2100FPS and so on up the line. However in your particular rifle by 38.0 gr. that 50 FPS increase is more like 45 FPS. 39.0 gr. drops even more to only a 20 FPS increase. You've reached point where the pressure FOR YOUR PARTICULAR RIFLE has passed the safe load level. The 39.0 gr. load might even give you a speed spike over 100 FPS or even a drop by 100 FPD from the prior shot .
It's late and I made this with even numbers to keep it simple. Actually each increase will not be that even but within reasonable change. It's the drastic jump or drop that tells you you have passed the limitation for Powder X. It's also a good idea to measure case head and pressure ring expansion while monitoring the velocity. Hit that radical change then drop back one to two grains and call it max. You can even graph the data as you work up. That will give a good picture of the powder's linearity.

Every powder I have run through Quickload has given quite linear results within - and just outside - their published min-max ranges. Those results, however, haven't translated into linearity in chronograph results.

I was about to click submit when another thought struck me - why the hell do I care?

A propellant will do that if you don't give it enough room to expand or don't give it something to propel. :D :D
