With the coming of the new 4 spec vaqueros, smaller, more gracile, for the cowboy set (I am one), can the little guns be hot rodded at all. or are the just :P for light loads?

Just for light loads? Nno. Just for SAAMI-spec loads? Yes. Which, frankly, are darned good in .357 and .45 Colt, and capable of doing at least 90% of anything a sane person would use a handgun to do.

If you are a hotrodder, stick with the Blackhawk or find an old Vaquero.

Brain Pearce did an excellent article in the June 2009 issue of Handloader on the 44 Special in the Lipsey's flattop which is the same gun essentially as the New Vaquero. That frame is plenty strong enough for any sane person's loads. I shoot the Skeeter load of 7.5 gr of Unique topped with a 240 gr. lead SWC. Trust me, it's all I want out of that gun and sometimes an afternoon at the range can become painful on my arthritic hands. He lists 960 fps as the velocity and you can hot rod it to go faster but honestly I don't know why you would want to. Get a 44 mag if you need more.

IMHO the 44 special mid frame guns may be Ruger's best ever in 44 spl. I can hardly wait to get my mitts on a stainless 44 spl New Vaquero!
