Still thinking on a 22 Mag cyl for the OMSS. Not instigatin' at all, honest question: What can I do with a 22 Mag OMSS I can't do with a 22LR OMSS?

basically shoot 'magnum' ammo, when the "need" for MORE power is wanted........you say "old model" , how old? as the serial numbers under #150,000 range have a smaller diameter bore (.222" nom) versus the larger, .224" nom used for the magnums after they came out in 1959-60............

I finally picked one up for my OMSS. Got it all working dry. Haven't tried it yet. Will try tomorrow provided the weather is good. I wanted the WMR cylinder for nostalgia and because even though the ammo is twice as much, it can be found once and a while around here.

I gave up shooting those expensive .22 mags. I've settled on the fantastic .32 Mag in my centerfire Single-Sixes!

Still pondering. How much more value will having both cylinders add? The sixgun is really a "truck gun", few chips out of the frame and @60% bluing.
I thought about the same thing and asked if anyone actually used their mag cylinder. Most replied that they seldom if ever used it. I decided not to waste the time and money thinking I would probably not use it either.

It looks as if it is twice as hard to sell a Single-Six if it doesn't have both cylinders. Why? I don't know, because people usually shoot a couple of cylinders full of the mags. and then put the mag. cylinder up and never shoot it again. The mag. cylinder usually gets lost and that's why you see so many used Single-Sixes for sale without the mag. cylinder. Try and sell a Single-Six without the Mag. cylinder and the first thing the buyer wants to know is where is the Mag. cylinder? I guess he wants it so he can put it up and not be able to find it when he sell the gun!!! :roll: :roll: :roll: Go figure.
As Elmer Keith noted with his S&W 651, the .22 magnum gives the user the same ballistics from a handgun that the .22LR offers from a rifle.
WMR ammo has gone up a good bit in recent years, but then again, .22LR is currently fetching $5 - $6 per box in many places, so....
I prefer a separate revolver for each round, but when out in the woods, I do carry my magnum revolver more often than the LR.

My OMSS never had a WMR cylinder until I got one for it and some people think they were all convertible. Obviously we here know the truth.

If you ask that question you probably don't have a need for the 22 Mag. I seldom use my mag cylinders and more or less just keep one gun with it's mag cyl in it. I shoot more of the new 22 Winchester Rim Fire in the mag cyl because they almost do the same thing but are cheaper.
Uses:
If I'm shooting Rock Chucks, the LR is not a reliable and humane killer.
If I only have a single six 22 with me, the mags are better for unexpected circumstances.
If I want to give the little grand kids a little more thrill when plinking at cans, I let them shoot some mags.
There you have it from my corner of the west.

Might do for woodsloafing. Read somewhere a .22 Mag pistol gives the OMSS .22LR rifle ballistics in a .22 pistol. On the hunt for a cylinder when I can scrape up money for it.
One of my favorite Single Sixes dose well with 22LR. I know what to expect from 22LR and as long as I am shooting within those parameters I know how well I am shooting. Now if I want to shoot for accuracy, for what ever reason be it self satisfaction or taking game the magnum cylinder goes on the gun and most of the time its Winchesters 22WRF that gets used in it. It's the most accurate round that I've ever shot in this gun. Now my 2 other Single Sixes seem to shoot about the same with their favorites for all loadings.
I know I've shot woodchucks with a .22 LR rifle with suboptimal results. I guess it always kills them eventually, but it's good to see them out of the hole. I suppose any animal this size or larger would be better dispatched with a 22 mag especially out of a handgun, but it definitely wouldn't be necessary.
