I found this in Dougan's book regarding their existence. I reached out to him, and he wasn't sure how they were used. I was kind of hoping someone on here would educate me/us on them.

In investment casting, that's called a burnout. They're mounted on a "tree" in multiples and form the cavities in the mold that quickly melt and are flushed out once it's filled with molten steel. I imagine that's quite a rare find in the Ruger collecting world!

I've heard of them doing that with wax but not with plastic.

Yes, wax is used in the actual casting process itself. The transparent plastic ones were cast as samples for engineering purposes.
