My life is a lot better cause I no longer buy anything over the net, I no longer have to worrie about SCAMS, I buy from people here in my town, not into retail stores other than gas and food. Life is like the old days SIMPLE and worrie free.

On the other side, my life is simpler because I can order a whole lot of stuff and it shows up at my door.

Dang it! it's a double edged sword IMO.

On line it's the worry &/or miss communication.

In person, not finding what ya need, or an untrained uh, person that can't or won't help.

My creed that I must try to remembember; I'm on my own wherever I venture.

If I had to spend the time required to find and dicker for everything I use, nothing else would get done. With the cost of driving around to find something, I spend a LOT of time on the computer searching for parts, supplies, and stuff while comparing prices. I buy a LOT of stuff that is delivered to my driveway and my pickup sits unused (and not burning $3/gallon gas).

Absolutely! And not having to deal with pushy “know it all” sales people. Internet sales and ordering online is priceless!

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
If what I need can be bought at the local Walmart or delivered to my door; it will be delivered. I can't walk long distances so I first have to find a close to the door parking space then hope they have a motorized cart available. It really isn't worth the hassle just to shop locally.

I'm a firm believer in buying locally... but then just about all I need locally is food and gas.... anything else it is a lot easier to just order online and let somebody drop it off at the front door. Oh, I guess I better add drugs and alcohol to the local list.

one burst from an enemy ECM weapon and all of you internet people would die. your brains would be destroyed. the net is becoming the brain.
heads up...by giving your brain to the net, all they have to do is turn it off and youll be so lost, your life would be chaos.
go back to normal American life. depend on community or self. love thy neighbor as thy self and stop electronic dependency. its an addiction. and most people don't realize their addicted until the fix is taken away from them. shut off your smart phone/computer and see how far you can go w/o it.
im slowly weening off of it all. and for everything I do on the net, I can do physically as a back up. I still (know) the old way. I grew up in it so its easy for me to reverse direction. I feel bad for those that grew up in tech and know nothing else. scary actually.

We could all go back to horses and wagons too but it is easier to get into one of those newfangled things call a 'horseless carriage'. We could send messages by those horses too but it is a little easier to pick up the phone (thank you Mr. Bell). I grew up with a BIG Philco in the living room and 'listened to' the thing called "RADIO", then came this thing called a television. Then there were these huge things called computers. Throughout time man has come up with ways to make his life easier and more convenient...it is called progress. As I have posted in my signature line: "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” Albert Einstein"

We need to get back to the barter system.

^^^This^^^

I see where they want to allow the IRS to know about all bank accounts with $600.00 or more in them.

I am for progress, capitalism, the free market, & the ability to choose how a person lives. And change is inevitable. But sometimes change isn't always good. Often, we are made to think we "need" something,, when in reality,, it's more of a "want". It wasn't that many years ago, we didn't have all the technology products we are now using.
We didn't have 300 TV channels.
We didn't have 10,000 sports programs to follow.
We didn't have instant gratification, or information at our fingertips.
We didn't have cars that drive themselves.

And remember,, "The Greatest Generation" didn't have any of this stuff either,, and they did just fine.

I personally feel it's in the attitude of the people. To that,, I say; "Let each person decide how to live their own life. If they succeed,, fine,, and if they fail,, it's on them."

Remember,, nobody gets out of life alive,, so it's the life journey that is we take that is important.

Just because I/we use the internet to our advantage does not mean that I/we can't revert to the 'old ways'.
Yes, I agree that there is a complete generation out there that would fold like a cheap paper plate at the loss of internet and cell phone BUT not everyone.
Some of us are simply dragged along by the new fangled technology(many kicking and screaming but still being dragged). For example: My work REQUIRES that I carry a phartphone and use an iPAD. I can't get away from that but I'm not enthralled by it--just part of the job. I've had the phart phone for 2 years and still haven't learned much about it other than what's demanded. I use a desktop quite a bit. It's also part of the job and my personal use is basically free so why not.
I don't/won't use 'social media' --personal choice.

I feel very strongly BOTH ways..... :-)

I do know one thing: The one thing that remains constant in life is CHANGE.

J.

I do both....
Restoring and driving a 1966 Plymouth right now for a fun project, just bought a headlight trim ring
from a guy in Pennsylvania that I never would have found without the internet.
Need a 12.99mm. metric spiral flute reamer to finish a job?...McMaster-Carr online catalogue and I get it the next day,
vs. spending an hour or two on the phone and driving for probably an equal amount of time.
On the other hand if, sometimes a big IF, I can easily buy what I want/need local I do.
Really it comes down to what ever is easier or more convenient for that purchase.
Life for me would move slower with out modern communications and I'd say it would be different
but not really harder or easier, just less efficient.
Dave

I agree with both sides. Humans are very good at adapting to their circumstances or environment. We have what we have today and most of us use it to our advantage. We should also not forget what we once had because you never know when we might be dealt a big setback. I think 'prepers' make some good points but I am not going to live my life like that, just too crazy. :D

As far as buying locally... If you have a part break and go to the implement dealer he invariably has to order it from the factory and it will be delivered to him in four days to three weeks. Ordering the same part online with rush delivery will have the part delivered to your house the next day and save two trips to town.

So . . . you will no longer need to run your massive "please buy all my stuff" classified ad here on RugerForum?
