Shooting high

I have a super Redhawk in 44 mag. I have been working on getting better at shooting it but I seem to have a consistent issue with it. I keep shooting high when not on a rest.

When I use a shooting bench, all of my shots are about 2” low at 25 yards but when I stand unsupported, my groups are just as tight but about 3” high. What do I need to be looking for in my shooting form/procedure?

It isn’t left or right at all, just high.

Thanks!

It’s in your grip. Maybe you need bigger grips? Like a Pachmayr. Hogue? One thing that might help, dry fire practice. Take your unloaded piece and dry fire, hold a sight picture on something and control front sight.

This is common. You will have a different grip when rested. You are likely putting pressure on the rest, which you aren't doing when shooting off-hand. When I do use a rest to check sights for hunting I grip the gun as I do off-hand and slowly lower it on the rest and just barely enough to steady the wobble. I then adjust my zero for off-hand shooting as I don't carry a rest in the field.

I would like to say I didn’t put pressure down on it but I am certain like most things muscle related, younever realize some of the things you do. I will check into that and see. My goal is to use it for white tail deer hunting and most of the I do from a stand so I would likely have something to steady myself on but I agree, I want to be consistent without support.

Do you rest the butt of the gun? Anything that changes the recoil impulse and the reaction of the gun to recoil will affect POI.

While I don't see as much of change as you do when I shoot, there is definitely a difference. That is why I always sight my guns in off-hand as that is my normal shooting method.
