Security Six?

I've located a SS Security Six .357 locally that I'm considering picking up. Not really familiar with these guns or revolvers in general. Any advice on what to watch for or avoid?

Welcome to the forum... The Security - Six are very strong, well made . Overall condition and signs of abuse, rust, pitts,. I have never had any problems with mine. If it is in good condition you will like it , Great shooters.

I've still got my first stainless security six snubby, and I've been carrying it around and shooting it for around 30 years now. Never a problem of any kind. Since that first one I've accumulated a few more. I suggest you buy the one you're interested in - I think you will like it. Nice thing about the brushed stainless finish is you can touch up marks on the finish without much trouble.

If you're new to revolvers you may want to search up some pointers on how to check out a used revolver to ensure it's mechanisms haven't excessively worn from use or been bent by abuse, etc. I've never seen a security six with any of those issues, but you never know...

Welcome to the Forum. I can't think of a thing to "avoid" except the usual stuff you look for when purchasing a used firearm.

Those are my personal favorites. Most agree there's just nothing negative to say about the Security, Service or Speed Six series of revolvers. I buy all I can whenever I can.

The Security Six series revolvers are the best value and the most underrated revolvers ever built by Ruger. I consider the Security Six and I think others do too the best medium double action revolver Ruger ever made. I like them better than the GP100. My Police Service Six 4 inch revolver I have had the longest of all my handguns. I like my Service Six so much I am going to compete in IDPA in stock service revolver. I know if I do my job my Service Six won't let me down. Check the revolver your looking at throughly before you buy but you will not get a better revolver.

Bought mine new in 1977. Inexpensive, light and powerful. It still goes on trips to West Texas with me.

Mine is 6 inch and I'm looking for a nice 4 inch which is easier to conceal.

A fine DA revolver.

I'm looking at a 4 inch barrel version myself. I think it would be the best barrel length for home protection and range time.

The only problem you will have is you will want more of them, all the sixes are great I prefer the speed six with round butt and fixed sights. But that is just a personal thing and I do own a security six SS snub. The 4" seems to balance really nice!!

Ruger did indeed produce a heavy barrel version of the Security Six; here's mine:

I agree about the Sec 6's being the best medium frame revolver Ruger ever made.

The only GP's I have ever handled that I like are the tapered/skinny barrel jobs, and they don't seem to be too common. Full lug barrels are useless as a dewclaw on a hound dog's leg for those like myself that carry a revolver over hard days of rough ground instead of just to and from the range. Extra weight for nothing, making a largeframe revolver out of a medium frame, killing off the whole purpose IMO of the medium frame gun itself. I really do not understand the attraction to full lugs though they seem to be wildly popular since almost all the compaies seem to emphasize them.

Anyway, here's my Sec6. We use ours mostly for varmint and trapline shooting, butcher stock killing and the like.

Great photos everyone. Thanks for the reference photos Greg. Those stag grips look really nice with the stainless steel. I believe the one I'm looking at is the standard barrel.

Hey arrowhd, I have three Security Six revolvers. My 4" has the heavy barrel and the 6" and 2 3/4" have standard barrels. I am not certain but I think I read somewhere that the 4" model was the only one offered with a heavy barrel. But you can never say "never" with Ruger
