I have an inherited Security 6 with a vented barrel. The barrel has all the Ruger lettering on it and looks unmodified . I have a certificate of authenticity and it is a GA 34 H . I am trying to determine the specifics of this piece of history and cannot make any progress. Below is a picture of the barrell. I have not seen another one like it and I don't think it was modified. Anyone have any insight into this?

Tell us more about the "certificate of authenticity-" what does it say, and who is it from?

Is it the typical Ruger "letter," detailing the model, shipping date, etc.?

What makes you think the barrel has not been modified- just the unmolested lettering? Guns ported by Magna-Port often had a single trapezoidal port near each side of the front sight. This one appears to have eight(?) ports, which strikes me as a bit unusual. 😳

I'd say it's almost certainly been modified… I'm certainly not familiar with any "factory" porting, of that sort.

The part I find curious is the porting on the underside of the barrel. The purpose of porting is typically intended to reduce recoil/muzzle flip. The ports are typically on top of the barrel, where escaping gases might help keep muzzle rise down.

It seems to me that the ports on the bottom of the barrel would almost encourage muzzle rise… or at least work to offset the benefit of the top ports(?).

I'm curious to see what our resident collectors and "-Six series" experts have to say!

All great questions. Yes to the standard Ruger letter of authenticity.
The original owner ( relative) was somewhat of a purist with his activities. Also knowledgeable on many topics. It wasn't his style to make mods.
I ran the example through chat gbt taking pictures of each of the ports and other essential points. It determined the ports to be well done but also doubted a factory mod but couldn't rule it out. The same response about the lower port was noted. It did say it appears lightly used and in pristine condition. Granted this is AI generated . I am just curious because nothing I have seen is similar and the question as to why keeps me curious.

If you send a gun off to a company that does porting, you expect it to come back looking professionally done. But it ain't factory work.

I don't understand the ports in the bottom of the barrel either.

When I was a teenager, I sent a S&W 29 off to get Magnaported. Of course, it was well done, but I ended up selling that gun because the reduction in muzzle flip didn't offset the hassle of having to wipe the soot off of the red ramp sight insert after every cylinder.
