I just traded for a Security Six. I am looking for original grips but my serial number on the bottom of the grip frame is not 150- or 151-.
It is 0425***
BTW it came with Pachmayr presentation grips which fit fine and which were only made for 151 or higher so that part is solved but what about the odd number?

Anyone have an idea when it was made as I can't find any reference with that kind of serial number

Welcome to the Ruger Forum.

Look on the bottom of the butt. Are you sure it is not 150-0425***? If it is it was made in 1972.

No it is exactly as I said. Someone must have altered it. It is a square butt if that helps any. I am assuming it is a 151 or later since the grips that were on it were made for that and they fit perfectly.
I also saw that CDNN has the wood grips for $9.99

Where'd you get the gun? Altered s/n's are frowned upon by a certain agency!

Just thinking out loud....

Concur. If I recall correctly, as recent as my retirement from State service in 2006, to have one was a felony on the federal level, as well as my home state.

It may have a serial number on it that has already been put on by ATF. I'd think that if somebody ground it off it would have probably stayed that way, unless ATF puts a new number on it.
Post a pic of the gun and we can tell you a little closer on its date of mfg.
