Security Six Problem

A friend of mine just bought a used Ruger Security Six, and despite a close inspection (that did not include firing it), after two rounds today it refused to advance the cylinder either double or single action. We dumped the cartridges (factory ammo), and even with an empty cylinder it failed to advance. If we helped it to advance it would then cycle normally for a number of trigger pulls, then once again lock up on the trigger pull and fail to advance the cylinder.

Any ideas or suggestions for a cause and/or fix?

A good, thorough and complete cleaning.

There's some great YouTube video's on a total disassembly process on these Six Series guns.

First ~ I'd take it apart, cleam it and reassemble. Test again and we'll see.

I agree with Hitman. I had a similar issue with my 4" Security six about a year ago just after I had bought it. I also had noticed before the problem that the cylinder was not spinning as freely as it should. I unscrewed the ejector rod from the cylinder (left hand thread) removed and cleaned the cylinder, rod, spring and star really well. That solved the problem, no issues with it since.
