Second thoughts about SP101

FOR SELF OR FAMILY PROTECTION YOU SHOULDN'T WORRY ABOUT WEIGHT. IF YOU CAN CONCEAL IT WITH LITTLE PROBLEM STOPPING POWER IS WITH THE .357 SP101 AND NO BRASS TO PICK UP UNLESS YOU HAVE TO RELOAD. THE SP IS EASILY CONCEALED EVEN ON A SMALLER PERSON WITH THE RIGHT HOLSTER OR FANNY PACK AND THE EXTRA SECURITY OF STOPING POWER IS THE IMPORTANT THING, THE LIGHTER SEMI AUTOS FOR BACK UP ARE A GOOD IDEA BUT THE SP101 IN 357 CLAIBER IS DEFINATLEY MY CHOICE FOR PROTECTING MYSELF, MY WIFE AND MY KIDS. I'M OMLY 5'6" AND 150 # POUNDS AND CAN CARRY THE SP AND A KELTECH 3AT WITH NO PROBLEM IN NO MORE THAN A T SHIRT, JEANS, AND A GOOD B\PAIR OF BOOTS. POLYMER GUNS DO HAVE A PROPENSITY TO BREAK DOWN (SPLIT)IF FIRED TO MUCH, WHICH IS COVERED BY THE WARRENTY, BUT WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO LIFE AND DEATH GO WITH SOLID STEEL.

It is because I love my wife and kid, I'm putting in .38 defensive rounds in the SP. .357's may penetrate through walls, and I don't want that bullet going any further than my intended target. Also, as a veteran SWAT team member once told me, it doesn't matter what "stopping power" a bullet caliber has, as long as you put two in the chest and one to the head." I'm fine with .38's.

I will be carrying .357's for woods carry, though.

Your absolutely right on both counts. Living in the country with Black Bears Coyotes, and Mountain Lions ( yes there are all three in Va. and Fla.) is why I like the stopping power of the 357 but for around the home the 38 spcl. is safer but remember, they too can penetrate Dry wall or clapboard structures so always keeping in mind whats behind that wall is a must. I like the Idea of a twelve gauge outside before they, the Bad guys, get into the house! On the farm I always carried a 22 mag loaded with snake shot as well.

Just as an update, got a 3" SP101. Super excited. Felt really balanced and I did like the upped velocity figures of the 3" over 2". It was a hard choice, and I hope I made the right one.

Like most Rugers the SP101 is a aweet choice in either brl. length. I really like the smooth feel and balance of my hammerless model in the .357 mag and of course it also loads the 38 spcl hp ammo as well which gives you the versitility you were looking for. And you can also alternate rounds of each ie. 38 - 357 -38 - 357 etc. I never have understood why they call them hammerless as they actually have a hammer just not the thumb lever but whatever, it is smooth coming out of the pocket or holster etc. as it doesn't have the thump projection on it to catch on stuff. Anyway I don't think you can go wrong with any of the variations of the SP101. I just hope none of us ever has to use them for self defence, or in defence of another but I've always thought its better to be armed and need the weapon than need it and not be armed. Remember Ruby's Caffeteria in Dallas! I think that most all of their clients are carriers these days. Of course that is in Texas after all.

I'd say you did. I love this model and have had great luck with it. Rock solid and easily maintained, cleaned etc.
