My son just bought himself a new SR40C and we are wondering what you members are carrying for SD loads in yours. He's really impressed with it and it's his first handgun. He's never shown any interest until recently. Thanks in advance.

There are dozens of high performance SD loads for any 9 mm, 40 S&W and .45 ACP. Speer, Winchester, Federal, Remington, Corbon, Hornady and others all make effective ammo. There is no "magic bullet" but they all work well.

I found a better question to be what grain of bullet do you prefer shooting. What do you seem to shoot better, lighter or heavier. Or maybe even your guns preforms more reliably or accurately with one or the other. Its a very small difference but after some practice most have a preference either way. Then I just matched the grain to a brand of self defense load.

That's how I came to the Gold Dot 180 grain. I admit the 165 grain has supposedly a better record on the street. Is it enough difference for me to change? Nope. Just my method.

My son is the new shooter, not me. I carry a 9 mm for my SD so I'm not familiar with the 40. I'm sure he's only fired the fmj target ammo so far and I was just looking for a starting point for him to begin. That's why I asked what you SR40C users were carrying in yours. At least I've got a reference point now with the 165 and 180. Thanks.

Just training for SD (which is virtually banned in Canada) I realized, that it's drastically different from target shooting as hearing protection is not there.
Personally, I would use a quietest round with a heavy bullet. The whack of 200gr with a mild load behind them should be sufficient IMO. As to design of the bullet, not sure it really matters at this caliber and bullet weight. I'd be concerned about expansion if restricted to less than 9mil.

I don't own a SR40c but I do own 2 .40 caliber full sized pistols. I prefer 165 or 180 grain hollowpoints also. I believe any quality manufacturers offerings are fine but I have been using 165 grain Remington Golden Sabers.

40 S&W has a array of great SD ammo out there ...
