Scouting for Buffalo - UPDATE!

One of my friends at the Salt Mine drew a Buffalo tag. We went for a drive well before sunrise on Saturday to take a look around his Hunt Area. The Buff's were scarce but the scenery was fantastic.....

A bit later in the morning we saw a big Bull out in the flats and then finally found the Herd, well out in the open and too far for a pic.

My friend will wait until the Herd get's "stirred up" a bit before he begins the chase.

My first Buffalo Hunt Was Unreal I loved every minute of it & it was a tough hunt it took 7 days down on the Henry Mtns of Utah. But in Utah all Buffalo Hunts are once in a life time so off to another state for the next one.. Nice pictures..

Well, here's the rest of the story......

My friend John was on site at "O'Dark-Thirty" on Wed. Saw some decent bulls then came across a BIG one. He was carrying a M-77 in .338.

8 shots INTO the Buffalo finally got the Bull mad and John barely dodged the horns and followed with a 9th "snap shot" while jumping out of the way of a "Full Speed Charge" :shock:

He called Mark over at the Salt Mine where we all work and Mark and I headed out to help. John and Mark "boned" the whole thing in about 3 hours. 800 some pounds of Buff Meat! Plus the skull and cape and most of the rest of the hide. It took two trips out with the pair of horses hauling the beast.

I'll share some pics when I can. We got lucky and none of the other forest critters caught wind of the gut pile while we were there. I spent a lot of time just "watching", esp. when the Horses weren't there. (Best Sentries in the Woods, for sure!)

Those big, solitary bulls are something to behold - I'm glad your friend escaped any injury.

I expect you'll get to share in some of that load of meat for all your efforts - enjoy! That is some good eating...

I cannot help but refer to the ongoing thread inquiring about the use of a .357 revolver for bear protection. Here we have eight hits from a .338 -- a chambering that produces MANY, MANY times the destructive power of a .357 -- and the critter is still able to charge the shooter. I feel completely justified in my comments in that other thread.

Yes, I was awarded several pounds of Buffalo Roast, some "burger" and some Elk Back-Straps for my effort.......

The Buff's Back-Straps were 5-6 inches thick and almost 4 feet long!

The "whole story" still makes me shudder. The final estimate was the Buff was a 1,800 to 2,000 lb. Tyrannosaurus Rex Wannabee.......right out of "Jurassic Park"!

The Doggone Wyoming "Fun and Games" Department won't allow a handgun on a Buffalo Hunt. Grrr, Cuss, Cuss, doggone rat##***!!!

A puny .30 cal. rifle is OK, but not a .454 Casull, or a .475 Linebaugh, etc.
My clunker handgun produces classic .45-70 ballistics.

Duh! I guess they've never studied some history or some current ballistic data.
