Scope ring replacement screws

I have a 1978 ventage M77 rifle. The 8 scope ring screws are the slotted type for a screwdriver. They are worn to the point I would like to replace them. Are replacement screws available from sources other than Ruger?

Brownells carries a lot of aftermarket screws. They at least used to carry hex-head screws for Ruger scope rings.

If you can find them, Torx heads will put up with more than standard hex "Allen" heads.

I believe that all of the new Leupold rings are now Torx.

I have been buying torx type scope ring screws directly from Ruger themselves.

Seems like about 4 bucks per set IIRC, but I did order several packages of them to try to live with the postage.

I have replaced several sets of the slotted screws with the Ruger torx type screws, mainly in No.1 type factory horizontal rings.

6-40 x 3/8...............Brownell's is great! just bought several with the torx head.

Got some ruger rings with the allen hex heads. Tried loosening one of the screws and rounded the screw head. Now I can't get it out. Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to get the screew out. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Catdaddy-

Try cleaning out the hole w/some gunscrubber or brake cleaner. Get out the trusty JB Weld and epoxy your allen wrench into the hole. Get out your Clamp Lamp or similar and shine it (close) on the crippled side of the ring overnight. This will hard-cure the JB and may help loosen up the bond (unless someone has done the dirty with red loctite).

This has worked for me a couple of times over the years. Otherwise, it's a drill job. Good luck.

When replacing screws all I have ever used is fingernail polish.

Clean threads (both sides) with brake cleaner or alcohol and then a drop of polish and tighten. I dont tighten nearly as tight as I used to.
