jmsfmtex, Well, for "starters" you can look at the manufacturer's recommendations. With high powered cartridges, you want at least 3 inches of eye relief. Depending on "what" gun you are mounting the scope on, you want to make sure the mounts are high enough so the scope doesn't hit any part of the gun or retard function. With .22 rimfires and lesser recoiling centerfires, you can cut down the eye relief to 2 to 2 1/2 inches. You also want a good quality "platform" (base mount) that is secured well to the rifle to absorb the recoil. The very good brands of scopes and mounts you will pay more for, but you get what you pay for. Excellent quality and value! Just a few points to ponder.
