Scarey airports

Amazingly enough Lexington KY can be rather interesting.

My first trip in I noticed we were rather close to the ground on approach.
The touch down was very close to the end, and if that was not enough, as
soon as the wheels were down the pilot hit the deflectors and immediately
on full throttle, with full brakes. Made what seemed the first turn off
toward the terminal, and then I looked at how much runway was left.
Can you say VERY LITTLE? In addition, if you don't make the turn, you
either back up (think about that one), or if you went . . way . . too far, you
go off the end of the runway into a very wide ditch.

It's no wonder they don't bring anything big in to there.

P.S. Only had to back up once, for a few hundred yards. Velly intellesting.

Bucholz Army Airfield on Kwajalein. The commercial airliner I was on (takeoff) taxied to the extreme end of the runway, spun up the engines, and only then released the brakes. When we finally lifted, I thought the whitecaps were going to splash on the tires - and maybe they did! Pretty short runway at 6,668 (yea I looked it up) feet.

I was waiting at the Roanoke VA airport back about Thanksgiving 2006 for a connecting flight to Charlotte NC, then on to Birmingham. It was a bit icy and Roanoke sits in a valley of the Blue Ridge mountains. It took the flight from Charlotte three tries to land and when the passengers finally disembarked, their faces could have passed for the Pillsbury Doughboy's, they wuz so white!

Flying over the Hindu Kush from Kabul, Afghanistan to Kunduz, in December, in a Russian helicopter, flown by a drunk Russian pilot, ain't no piece of cake either!

Oops, Looking at my list, I forgot one; St Pete here in Florida, That's where Alligiant operates from.
I wish I HAD gotten FF miles for all them rides, but some were military.
Okay, reminded now of a story:
When I flew on company business, I had an expense account and would list "In Flight Refreshments"; One day my boss called me into his office and said , "Corporate has decided that you can NO LONGER list 'In Flight Refreshments' on your expense account." I replied , "OKAY" and stood there looking at him.
He looks at me and said "We're STILL going to be paying for them aren't we in one way or another."
I said," Well, I think I JUST felt an earthquake that moved all the Sears stores a couple of miles further away from the plant." I got paid mileage for using my personal auto to visit the various Sears Stores.

But speaking of scary, I've been to Philly and Newark. Always feel like I need a tetanus shot just walking through those places...

My wife flew out of Philly once and swore that she would walk before going out of there again. She said she felt she needed a bath once out the terminal.

1/19 the LONG runway is only 7,169 ft long. Compare that to BWI 10/28 at 10,502 ft and there is no water at either end.

So it's 1 and 19 now. Magnetic shift by the way. It used to be 36 and 18 just like MSP was 29 and 11. That Airport is now 30 and 12.

Does everyone understand that magnetic variations change over time?
