saving the brass

I am really not much into semi auto pistols, but I do have a couple, 9MM and a 10MM Auto.

Now the 9, I don't worry about because I can buy ammo cheap enough and if I wanna hand load it, brass is cheap enough that I don't worry about it.

The 10, on the other hand is strictly a hand loading proposition for me and not losing the brass is important to me.

Have any of you guys figured out a way to keep your brass corralled ?

I hang a sheet next to the table were I'm shooting on two poles & the bottom goes into a 5 gallon bucket..
I'm about 2-3 feet from the sheet while firing..
Alot of guys spread the sheet out on the ground to the right of were their shooting..
Some handguns eject to the left BTW.. Walther P5 for instance..

I don't reload any longer but give the brass to friends that do or sell it @ the recycling center..

I use the sheet on the ground method. Kind of a nuisance, but beats hunting and pecking through the grass. I found an old very large, thick material sheet - have to put rocks/bricks on it only on very windy days. When I'm done shooting I fold the 4 corners so all the cases fall to the middle, stuff it in a bag & sort it out later.

Has anyone tried a metal detector?

I'm actually working on a unit that will attach to the gun itself and catch the brass. I'll let you know if I ever get there.

When I was shooting the Bianchi Cup we made a unit out of PVC pipe on rollers. It had the "fish netting" on it and was tall enough to catch the brass from a normal shooting position. It worked really nice. As you moved from barricade to barricade or position to position would move it along with us.

My buddy Terry used an open umbrella stuck in the ground a few times. Looked stupid but it worked.

You can build a cheap and easy way to catch your brass with a canvas, pvc pipe (size depends on the weight of your canvas) and an ammo can/bucket. Just get one T, a base and 4 elbows. Have the square be 3' x3' and the canvas attached to it with velcro or buttons. It might take a magazine to get it placed in the right spot, but once you do it smooth sailing. If your really industrious you can get a 30mm ammo can and have the pvc break down and fit in the box.
