What sandbags or shooting rest do you all use for target shooting when not shooting off hand ? I need one that is durable Thanks

I think my bag is an "Uncle Buds Bull Bag" that I filled with small plastic pellets. It's lighter than sand, and if it gets wet, it doesn't mildew as it dries quicker. THe Bull Bag is an excellent bag for shooting off of. If you are handgunning, I add a seperate piece of leather to the area where cylinder gas, & muzzle gas might eventually burn it. It's easier to replace a scrap of leather, vs a new bag.

Walmart sells (or used to, anyway) a pretty nice set of sandbag rests for about $20.

I got a set of the walmart bags this weekend and with in 50 rounds I burnt them up bag split. Went back to store and exchanged them and same thing so I need to find something that will hold up

Must be a different set. I bought mine several years ago and have used them for thousands of rounds and they're held up fine. They're only a little dirtier than brand new ones is all. And when I'm not actually using them, they "live" in the trunk of my car.

Shot bags filled with sand work best but they are heavy. Two options: jeans or khaki twill pants legs (especially kids sizes) or adult size shirt arms made from denim or twill filled with cat liter or sand. Most of us have shirts or pants with a usable lower sleeve or leg after the usable wear is gone. If you do not sew, a leather shoe lace or parachute cord will tie the ends. jack (the cheapskate)

I use shot bags or denim filled with cheap brown rice. Also serves as emergency rations if I get lost on the range...

Don't have one but MidwayUSA has tte Caldwell Pistolero rest on special sale this month for $13.99. For the price how can you go wrong?

I do have a Caldwell Jr rest that I've been bench shooting off for a long time and it has held up well.

I used a homemade bag for 30 years made of light grade leather, (wife at the time sewed it together with a zipper) but somehow I got separated from it in one of my house moves. I bought a set of those Wal-Mart bags a few years ago and have had no problems with them since. Can't understand how your Wal-Mart bags didn't hold up!..................Dick

This is what I do also, never thought about "rations" before though.

How? Are you burning/splitting them with barrel/cyl gap flash? :?

I have an old nylon bag that I filled with rice. It has lasted for years.
I like the ability to move the rice around and conform better than sand.

Hey Bucks Owin Yea I quess that is what is happening I tried to keep barrel away but it's hard to do with 45/8 barrel

Thought so..

What I do is have a piece of leather in place to shield my sandbag from that. I use my heavy leather silhouette blast shield layed up against the bag but even some thin leather (or substitute) will protect your bag from "blast blowout"...(for lack of a better term) The blast out of the barrel/cyl gap is pretty intense and will burn most material in short order....(I recommend against laying a finger up there to find out!  )

You'll figure something out... 8)

I use bags the way Brian Pearce and John Taffin suggest. In that I press the junction of barrel and frame into them and rest my forearms either on the edge of the bench or on bags. If you do it this way, no cloth bag will ever survive the flash from the barrel/cylinder gap. So I make my own bags out of heavy suede. Been using the same bags for 10-15yrs with zero issues. I just try to use the same bag on top every time so they don't all get scorched.

I'm cheap. I found two canvas clothespin bags with grommetted tops at Wmart, filled two gallon freezer bags with play sand, put the bags in the bags, got my wife to sew the green canvas bags shut and I have been using them for a couple of years.

Cut off jean legs are popular too.

I saw that. They wanted $12 shipping (parcel post!) plus three dollars "special handling" since the order would be under twenty-five (nothing else I wanted). That's $29 for a $14 rest, no thanks. I got one at local LGS for $30 out the door.

I did a few mods on it. I used larger, tougher "feet" left from another project. I replaced all of the screws with stainless ones. I replaced the cad plated steel lock knob with a nylon bolt, plus put a rubber thread cap on it, so it won't chew a hole in the plastic vertical adjustment post. Having the "feet" already, these mods cost me less than two bucks and now I really like it. Haven't gotten to try it yet, though.

I actually got some scrap oak flooring, which I glued together into a big block about 16the inches long and 6 inches wide or so. It must be 9 or 10 inches tall. On top of that I just use one of those small peltor leather rests. It is nice and heavy and doesn't move.
