Anybody else see this new "wonder gadget" on TV? It's so amazing that it slices forward and backward. I kind of see this as people who are not well coordinated cutting something more than a vegetable on that back stroke.

Then there is that other new wonder tool. It's a knife and cutting board combined. As fast as they use that thing on TV, I don't see how ordinary people are going to get nice uniform slices. I suppose it's pretty hard to come up with anything new these days that isn't a stupid piece of junk. Let's see that thing slice a tomato.

I don't think there is anything that can beat a plain old dedicated sharp knife in the kitchen. Bob Wright has been bringing up old practices that people used to do.

This brings one to mind for me. How about Beaver's Mom, June Cleaver? She used to handle that little paring knife beautifully while slicing carrots or potatoes and she was fast with it. She was shown a lot in the kitchen shots using that paring knife. I guess it's a lost art.

One more thing. That cheap little $0.49 cent vegetable peeler is a little wonder itself.
Ever have one get dull on you? Just find a left handed friend and switch peelers with them. You'll both wind up with an unused blade. Imagine that, they could peel both on the forward stroke and the backward stroke, although I've never seen anyone try to use one like that.

The back stroke works well for peeling pears. At least it does for me.

Hi,

Uh, oh, I'm left-handed already! Now what? ;)

Well...

Many years ago I bought a Spyderco sharpening kit after seeing the guy at the fair put a shaving edge on a rock with one. Ok, maybe not quite, but y'all have seen these hucksters and how easy they make things look. One of his "helpful hints" was on sharpening those veggie peelers after suggesting they come from the factory already moderately dull. I did mine, then did my sister's. Cutting instruments in her kitchen are perpetually dull, and she'd never been able to peel anything with it. What a surprise!

Can't trade with you. I'm also left handed. Considering the number of right handers compared to left handers, there ought to be more people than you can shake a stick at to trade their right handed dull peeler for your left handed dull peeler.

And the Beav's mom did it in pearls and heels.
Nothing like a good sharp knife that you can wash when done. That thing looks like it would catch all kind of bacteria growing crud up in the handle.

Wondered about that myself. They show just sticking the whole thing in the dish washer. It must be able to be taken apart for a good cleaning.

I also wonder how you are supposed to be able to sharpen it if it gets dull?

As for the Beav's Mom. If you feel at the front base of your neck just above the sternum, there is a slight hollow there where the tendons run up your neck on either side. Hers was a little exaggerated and the studio lights cast shadows on her neck making it look funny. Hence she started out with a necklace which was eventually switched to those pearls. She also started out wearing "flats" around the house. But, as the two kids grew taller, they put her in heels to compensate. Couldn't have the kids be taller than Mom. True stuff, right out of Barbara Billingsley's mouth. Saw it on YouTube.
