I had a membership years ago, and some things were cheaper, most things weren't! I found out they were the only people in Middle Tn that carried an item, they couldn't find that I ever had a membership, but for $80 they make me a member! :shock: Needless to say, I said NO THANKS!

I heard on local radio today that many of them are being converted to distribution centers to compete with Amazon and grocery delivery service.

Sam's Club was an innovation that successfully beat out a lot of its competition. Unfortunately for them the innovation became etched in stone and wasn't able to change enough to beat out the new innovation. Times change and if the institutions don't change with them they get left in the dust of history. People can always use their Sam's Club membership card as a bookmark for their Sears Roebuck catalog.

My wife and I were interested in joining years ago and went to the local Sams and found an employee and said we'd like to look around to see about joining they told us we could not come in unless we were a member and had to join first. No thank you! Then my liberal wife found out about Wallmart and I could not argue with her since 95% of the stuff they sell there is made in china and you really don't need... and so we don't shop Wally world either.

We use Sam's club quite a bit. We have a "plus" membership. It costs $110 annually. However our last rebate was $138. So, basically we paid no membership and they paid us $28 to shop there. I filled my car there last night for 30 cents a gallon less than all the other gas stations in the area. That was 25 gallons times 30¢ equalling a $7.50 savings on one tank. I shop hard on prescriptions. For my family, they beat many others for prices. They have a pretty good list of greatly reduced generic drugs. The savings on one of our prescriptions alone is actually more than the cost of membership. So for my family of six, it is a money saver. But not everything there is always lower. For many years, milk was almost a dollar a gallon cheaper than the supermarkets. Now many of them are fighting back and becoming more price competitive. And actually there is a Sam's club not to far from me that is the pits. Their prices for many items are much higher. When I questioned them at the service desk, I was told that Sam's club often price shops the closest competition and sets prices according to the neighborhood. Gasoline is often the same other more than local stations in that area. I don't shop there. Plus the sales tax rate is over 10% in that neighborhood, as opposed to less than 7% in mine.
Retail, however, is a cut throat business. I recently read that the U.S. has way too many stores in comparison to Canada and Europe. Sears was once the Amazon of it's day. A lot of my career was in retail management. I developed and opened a lot of stores in malls that are long gone. I wasn't bad at what I did. I did work for companies that were over aggressive in getting those stores open. My advice was often overruled. I could see that the numbers often weren't there even before we started on a location, but higher ups somehow could convince themselves that all the data that was available didn't matter. They were going to beat all those numbers.

We have the cheapest available Sam's Club membership and do go there once or twice a month. But only for a few items. Jif peanut butter is cheaper by several dollars than any grocer in town as is a certain brand of yeast rolls too (Misus Schu-something). And razors and frozen vegetables and plastic food wares for picnics.
And then there's the work benches. Ahh the beautiful, heavy duty versatile work benches. Seville brand solid laminated hardwood tops 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inch thick and on sturdy steel frames. Some rolling on solid rubber wheels with locks. And cheaper than similar Chinese imported benches at any home store, department store or anywhere else we've found for that matter. I looked everywhere for a good, solid workbench made here at home in the USA but aside from high dollar custom ones, there were none we found. And aside from not ever being physically able again to build my own bench as I did twice since the early 1990's, the materials alone would be more than we could afford. And on some versions the shipping is....free. Just wow. The "mobile work station" for one bill shipped to our door would make a fantastic reloading bench. Bet the Fedex man hated delivering it to our front porch 3 days ago. We use a 6 foot version as our kitchen table/island, where I reload. As I type this, we are awaiting the 4 foot workbench with pegboard, LED overhead light, and power strip with USB ports for $209. And a second 6 footer. Shipped by Fedex to our door.
My beloved Miss Penny, a dedicated crafter, quilter and scrap booker has finally agreed to improve her craft room and make it as we both have wished it could be for many years. The mobile work station 6 foot adjustable height bench and the 4 foot lighted workbench are all going to be hers. And I'm so so happy for the wonderful woman who agreed to share the remainder of her life with me 10 years ago folks.

Hey. I'm not defending the closure of the 60 plus stores. But we are a capitalist economy based nation. Business is in business to make money. Just like I didn't have a lawn care service I owned and operated in the 90's to give out do-it-at-a-loss mowing. I wanted to profit, which I did and put braces on both my children the first season of operation.
I share the information about this line of work benches here because they are great for what Miss Penny and I need them for. Maybe others won't like them.

You got it on the work benches. The beautiful hardwood tops are worth the price of the whole bench. We bought the bench and two cabinets for Wifie's garage stuff. The work bench is nice enough to use as an island in the kitchen :D :D I do pretty good wood work, but no way could I build wood ones at the price of these.
Yes we save money at Sams on gas and products.
Our Sams is about 3 miles away and is not closing, which is good.

Was at Sam's yesterday buy in bulk and save. Works for us! Linda does lots
of baking those supplies flour sugar spices are a bargain. 5 or 10 lb. bag of
flour does not last with her. Fresh bread daily love it. ps

It's called a global economy.

One of the pluses is a global economy lessens the chance of war when (as in this case) it comes to China. Their economy is massively helped by the trade they do with us which in turn means the chances of war with them is lessened.

As for Walmart selling mostly stuff from China is bunkum.

I've bought, to list a few items: Mobil 1 synthetic oil, Colt LE6920 rifles (when they still sold them there) lots of Federal and Winchester ammo, meat, dairy, produce, and on and on and none of this stuff came from China. These same items are sold elsewhere for higher prices though..

Walmart also hires those who probably couldn't find employment elsewhere, like the elderly, the under-educated, and the plain odd. These folks do a good job. No, they don't get fabulous incomes, but they do have jobs, rather than be on welfare.

And no, I own no Walmart stock or work for them.

But when I see untruth posted about them I say so...

In announcing the raise in pay for WalMart employees the CFO announced that the raise in pay was the result of the projected tax savings for WalMart created by the Trump Tax Savings in 2018. He also stated that the savings would also permit additional employment and other benefits.

Will, I'm with Tom on this one. You will never convince me there isn't a connection between W-M's pay raises and the demise of the Sam's outlets. And regardless of whose "propaganda" you subscribe to, those W-M employees enjoying pay increases are doing so at the cost of several hundred jobs at Sam's.

The forced pay increases are having the expected fallout. Just yesterday I read about a burger chain who will "save" $8 million by the simple step of firing all their buss help and having the wait staff make up the slack. The same outfit "saved" $10 million by eliminating the kitchen positions who "plate" the orders ready to be served, again putting additional work on the wait staff.

This will continue all over those businesses who rely on low-salary employees. We see it in our local restaurants, the wait staff are being run ragged.

Didn't say that isn't true. Point is, I get a little irritated when a company "saves" money by dumping employees and expecting the remaining ones to "make up the slack". The politicians at the heart of the matter never see this happen to them. And as far as unemployment goes, that is at least partially paid for by both you and your employers. Having been there a couple of times, I can tell ya it's not a "living wage" . . . but of course it's not intended to be.

And when I worked in a pizza joint a million years ago I did everything . . . cooked, cleaned, waited tables, bussed, ran deliveries, and shoveled the snow in the winter. This was understood at the start of course, so I didn't think I was being abused. These days the situation is defined as "other duties as assigned". :wink: :wink: :wink:

Wyandot Jim it's funny you should mention the tall cabinets for $200 because........Miss Penny bought two of the same cabinets for HER storage in her craft room (Grin). I just didn't think about showing them here. Those were in stock at the local Sam's and we picked one up, liked it so much we went back and she bought herself another. As I type this, Penny's been in our family room this morning as the snow and ice blows outside, organizing them and filling them up, to be easily rolled into her craft room when finished. We have smart and sensible spouses.
Her craft room is NOT a "Woman Cave" any more than in my own marriage I would want a "Man Cave" exclusive of Penny's input. We have a completely sharing marriage and she and I conferred with each other about layout in her craft room. She's helped me design my leather room too. Penny quilts, makes boutique jewelry, scrap books, sews and experiments with lots of creative things. She also encourages me to reload in the kitchen instead of the garage, urged me to take up casting my own bullets and helped finance the Shockwave I wanted and got last summer because it was a fun little firearm. A little anecdote here. We went to pick the Shockwave up at our favorite rural dealer when it came in. The have a dirt pile range out back to try out used stuff before you buy. One of the owners politely refused to try the Shockwave until Penny and I came back inside from each of us putting half a dozen rounds apiece through the little blaster (we had brought our own ammo). He asked "Penny you shot it??" Penny said "Yeah several times." He said "Well then I'll do it too". He fired it twice and said "There I did it. I'm done... It's got a little kick."
