SA Grip fit chart

I'm new here and buying the first Ruger SA I've bought in MANY years. First Ruger was a used Mk.1 .22 w/muzzle break I bought in 1968 and first Blackhawk was a new .44 mag I bought in 1970. I wish I still had both of them.
I had the Mk.1 factory reblued for $15 back in 70's and traded for a SS M92 Berreta when they came out in SS about '85ish.
I stupidly traded the 7 1/2" old .44 in on a newer 10" model I JUST HAD TO HAVE when they came out. Boy was that a mistake! Finish and accuracy was no where near the earlier BH.

I just purchased a Montado . They captured my heart after handling a few.

My question is about grip fitting on all the models/years of Ruger SA's.

Is there a chart somewhere that lists years/sn's range/models for diferent type grips.?
I guess I could start with the NEW model Vaquero 'Montado'. Does the Montado still have the same grip frame as the regular New Model Vaqueros? AND is THAT grip frame the same as any of the older Blackhawk grip frames? I have a few grips laying around for years!
I know the grip lock grips have a cutout which wouldn't be a problem for me to do if screws, etc. are all in the same spot.

Surprise, surprise.......the Montado is just a New Vaquero with a bit of fluff added. It has the same grip frame, the only difference being the ribs machined into the front strap.

All the new Flattops Ruger has come out with lately also have this grip frame on them. Remember, these guns are roll marked as New Model Blackhawks but they are flattops. The grip frame is the new XR3 and is not the same as a regular Blackhawk.

By the way, look at your gun, it doesn't say Montado anywhere on it. As I said, it's a New Vaquero. In no way am I diminishing the Montado, I'm just telling you what it actually is.

Yes, I've looked at several. Was simply confused if grip was same as regular new Vaq. and how similar those were to the older blackhawks. i think some of the older grips I have laying around might possibly work once they spend some time with a dremel?

There is a lot of difference between those older blackhawk grips and those montado grips.

Check the drawings below to see the actual difference. Those older blackhawk grips would be the XR3-RED and the Montado grips would be the XR3. You would have to do a lot of reshaping and have to redrill the grip pin locator hole. You'll have to cut approx. .125" off the front verticle part of the grip where it meets the cylinder frame and that will throw off the location of the medallion. It would also alter the location of the grip screw hole. I'm not sure but it might interfere with the hammer strut after that. Personally I think you would be better just buying a cheap set of wood grips that fit without going through all that.

yes I see.
Frankly, I'm not sure exactly where the grips i have came from but I'm thinking from old factory reblue jobs so possibly won't work at all. It's good to know that the XR3 is what I need to be finding though, thanks.
i just don't like those black plastic grips on anything, including Colts.
