Went to visit my doughter at foot Mt. Rainer and and she showed me her 22 rifle that was left in the horse trailer. Yup you got it bright red. So i think 0000 steel wool and light oil.Let me know if on the wrong track.
 
That will work. But I have had better luck with Blue Wonder Bore Cleaning gel. It eats rust very little steel wool work is needed.

Just use a cleaner wax for automotive finishes. That might be all you need. Steel wool is simply that, steel so regareless of how fine it is, it's still steel against steel.

But it's soft steel. As it happens, it's harder than rust, but softer than any kind of gun steel I've ever used it on. I have never hurt bluing with steel wool.
