Rust preventatives

I know this has been discussed in length pertaining to storage and off the shelf products available.

My question is directed towards what Ruger puts on the metal, from the factory, that keeps the gun from rusting?

I have two RSI's that have never had the wood removed and the bluing is perfect under there. I have recently redone the stocks and am readying things to reassemble them, but would like to treat all the metal portions that will be covered with the wood.

Some would call me lazy for not removing the wood each season and treating it, but both of these guns are 25+ years old and there is no rust where the wood was. So if I can get my hands on something similar, it would be great.

To my knowledge, nothing.

In fact, several of the blued Ruger firearms I've received - new and used both - have showed significant signs of "unstopped" bluing. A rag run over a barrel will come back orange from apparent surface rust. It cleans off relatively easily, and does not come back (at least with the products that I use), but it has been a PIA on more than one gun. Before I learned it was unstopped bluing I thought I had gotten a rusty Bisley Single Six direct from Ruger. I had to completely disassemble the brand new gun just to clean it up. Another example was a Mini 14 I got used where the original owner had apparently never noticed the orange patina on the barrel. My .44 flattop was relatively clear of the problem.

That statement may be more to the point than you realize. The area under the grips never comes in contact with your hands, which contain perspiration, which contains salt.

I use something inexpensive on the blueing under wood grips panels, black shoe polish. The wax seems to seal the metal, I brush it on, and depending on the mood I'm in either leave it just that way or I'll let it dry and buff it to a shine before putting the wood panels back on.

Try "Barricade" It is designed to prevent rust period. Its not a solvent or anything else. One can should do a whole safe full of guns. I've had great results so far. Storing them in a well ventilated dry are helps alot also !

I apply a thin film of RIG Universal under the grips of my blued guns. I also seal the grain on the back side of the grips with something (lacquer or polyurethane), because the factory rarely does.
