Started a new thread on this one. Didn't want someone to feel that I was trying to hijack 'Ruger won't return gun, really' thread. The focus there shifted a little bit so that's why I'm here. I'm not computer literate enough to figure out how to scan something or copy and paste or any of that other geek stuff, so bare with me.
On 6/10/14 I e-mailed customer service about a BNM-7 I was having issues with I DID include a legitimate serial number, which is not listed in the reply from Ruger.
A request number was included in the response
My inquiry is as follows. "I have a BNM-7 that I would like to send back for a re blue and a tune up. The trigger seems quite "sticky" I don't have a scale to measure the let off weight but it seems excessive. There also seems to be some excessive travel in the trigger. Could you please advise me as to what this may cost at least a ballpark as I do understand that the actual cost can only be determined by direct examination. If I do send it back, could you let me know what the procedure is? Do I need to do this through a ffl?"
The response was short and sweet.
"Unfortunately, we no longer offer service or parts on this discontinued model. You may send in your firearm to our NH facility and we will offer you a buy back of $340.00 for this model only. Please contact our Customer Service Department for further information at 603-865-2442, and one our representatives will be happy to assist you. Thank you for your email"
Then the email goes on to tell you about when the factory is closed for July vacation, different phone numbers, etc., etc.
One of the last lines is........."thank you for your patience and understanding"
If I remember correctly $340.00 was full list on a 7 1/2" Max when they came out.
IMHO they are really just telling you don't send a Max in. I don't think this answered the question that they would "confiscate" it or not. I'm pretty sure you would have to have a return authorization to send a gun to Ruger. I doubt you just see someone shipping them with out one.. So............now we know there IS a buy back for the Max. Maybe if I had one that went through a fire, totally unrepairable, I might, consider sending it in for $340.00, that is if I didn't make a cut away of it first.........a cutaway, hmmmmmm. sounds like that may have earned a spot on my bucket list.
So I guess I have possibly clarified a few things, and then created a few more questions. No wonder collecting Rugers get so interesting, God Bless, Coogs.

Good effort, Coogs.

Yes, this establishes the current position Ruger has with respect to the Maxis. Good to know for all those with these collectible items. (They'll never see mine!) What has happened in the past is still speculation, of course. Times, and personnel, do change.

I believe what would needed is a direct "if I send this, do I get a 100% guarantee I get it back" tip of question. I'd still want the response to come form someone up the ladder and in writing.

Blkhawk73, from what I'm able to determine here is that will never happen. I asked about sending one back, they basically said don't, we don't service or have parts for that discontinued model. So if you can't even send it back to begin with, how could you get a 100% guarantee to get it returned? I think going up the food chain ain't going to help, well, not unless you happen to know someone. JMHO, Coogs.

so once again, some "semblance of truth" to what others have said happened to them over the years when they sent one in ,for "whatever", the word "confiscate" is just the wrong one too many "others" have added to now its called a "buy back" hell that's what they told ME as to our Mini-14 and the last Security Six I had sent in, AND said NO, ship it back....they did in my cases......hhhmmmm, when you think about it, if they have NO parts, CANNOT make a proper repair or service, what else are they "supposed" to do??? cannot pull a NEW Maxi outta their butts 8)

and as for MY 'guns" we made them "right" ourselves.............

and NO, we will NOT do ANY more. 8)

When I worked in the NH factory they told me that they never send them back to a customer, you either took the $340 or nothing, company policy, depending on how the dept. head felt on any given day. There were times when they would offer another revolver in exchange. They scrap them. They are considered a liability by the legal dept.

Approximately 8 years ago I sent a Maximum back to Ruger without a RA and asked them to correct the timing problem. Ruger contacted me and said they were recalled and Ruger said I could have anything I wanted in exchange. They didn't offer me cash and I received a new blue SBH at no cost.

As for proper repairs, are not the only two differences between a Maxie and a SBH the frame and cylinder, also what category does bluing fall under,Maxie hazardous material ! :?

The legal department makes the rules at Ruger. Bill Ruger told me once that " If anything takes this company down it will be the legal department "

Seems to me you would be better off just having a gunsmith 'tune it up' and then send it to someone who does bluing (if that is important to you). Either that or just sale it. Someone would pick it up. At least the gun would stay in circulation rather than scrapped.

Lets put it this way, I just made the story up about my Max to give it some credibility. Who knows what they would have said if I hadn't. I would never send one of the "few" I have back anyways.................just trying to get them to put something on paper, Coogs.

Clarifying . . . You made up the story you told Ruger about wanting to return the gun for work, right? But you DID have that conversation with them in regard to your alleged gun problem, right? And you DID get the indicated response from Ruger, right?

Don't want no confusion here . . . and I'm easily confused.

;)

Yes, yes and yes. Like I said, I actually gave them a legitimate serial number, described some issues and asked them about the process of sending it in. The previous quoted responses are from the e-mail that I received back from them. I'm computer illiterate or I would scan the e-mail and post it, but, alas..................Coogs
