Ruger SuperRedhawk ALASKAN 7-shot .44 - - - ! ! !

RUGER used the .454 / .45 LC cylinder and drilled 7 HOLES in .44 ( OK, .429 ) :o

Is this feasible? desirable? worth it?

I'd rather see a SBH cyl in a SBH with less, not more. Like 5 big .480 Ruger holes in the cylinder... JMO as a SA fan :wink:

The heck with that 480 thingy... Take the Maxium frame, beaf it up a little and make a 475 Linebaugh and 454 Casull single action. If you could fit 6-shots in there, great - if not I think I would still be interested in a 5-shooter 454 Super Blackhawk Hunter.

I have two .357 Maximums , a 7-1/2 and a 10-1/2 and nobody wants them. I was thinking about making one a .474 Linebaugh. Anybody here done that or planning to do it?????

In the SRH, the cylinder is long enough to make a 475 LB as it is.

Are the SBH cylinders shorter than the SBHs?

The SRH cylinder is longer than the single action's. Have to do some measuring to see if it would work with the .475 and those long LBT's. I can't really see any reason to go all the way to the .475 though. They would be dumping their proprietary cartridge to gain 2000psi and 100fps, which is a small gain in performance with a considerable gain in recoil.

The 475 is awesome. I have a bfr in 480/475 linebaugh. The 475 is way more powerful than my 454. The bfr is basically a ruger but the fit and finish is better than any of my rugers. It's a awesome gun. I'm not taking anything away from rugers I love them but the bfr is like a ruger custom shop gun would be in my opinion. The bfr price is double that of a ruger but you get what you pay for in my opinion. If I ever get another bfr it will be the 45-70 in the bfr. They are ugly but I could live with it even with the long cylinder.

My thinking was obviously opposite of what it's turned into.
RUGER is making a 7-shot GP-100 for the .327 Federal, if I'm not mistaken.
I suddenly thought it might be a viable option for the SRH ALASKAN ( or any SRH ) to take the beefier cylinder of the .454/.480 and put 7-holes in it for the .44 Magnum.
With that move, it simply gives the shooter/hunter an extra round for plinking, hunting or self-protection in the woods.
Many shooters are not enamored with the more powerful, bigger cartridges, and my find they would like to have the extra shot in a .44, plus be able to load it with the more potent offerings in that cartridge.

It seemed like a good idea at the time... :lol:

I've long pined for a FA in .500WE but don't kid myself that I'd enjoy shooting anything in it above about "half throttle". One simply can't fire a big bullet at "magnum" speeds in a "packable" handgun without paying the price in eye popping recoil and when shooting one of the "hand howitzers" a couple hundred fps means little. A .480 SBH would be all that 90% of even those of us used to, and not greatly bothered by, recoil in full tilt "big bore" (.44/.45 class) handguns could reasonably expect to call much "fun"!

And yes, much as I admire Linebaugh (!) and his ground shaking cartridges, it would make little sense for Ruger to go with the .475L over their own fine .480...And a SBH .480 would give the .480 Ruger rd a boost in sales, no doubt about it.

I agree! I really don't see much reason to push them any faster than 1200fps and IMHO, heavy bullets at moderate speeds are much more comfortable to shoot than lighter bullets at the highest velocities. If I need more, I go heavier, not faster. The .480 or any of the 50's for that matter will do anything I'll ever need doing with heavier bullets at 1000-1200fps and the critters will be just as dead.

Back to the OP, the cylinder is not beefier, it's the same diameter, just made of a stronger or more appropriately, more elastic steel. Which may or may not be applicable. Not sure if there would be enough room for another round of .44Mag.

You don't need the Maximum frame for a 475 Linebaugh or 454 Casull. The standard NM Blackhawk works fine. Here's 454 I built a few years back:

Now if you want to build a 460 S&W or 475 Linebaugh Long, you'll need the Max frame.

Quarterbore, just send a 45 Colt Hunter or Bisley Hunter to John Linebaugh and he will make it into a 5 shot 454. He actually lists it as an option on his website. :D

No, by the time you add another hole you would wind up with about .007" or so between the chambers.
