Ruger Security 9

First I have seen it.
What the hell is it? Says it has the action (trigger) of an LCP which is a double action but the short pull of a striker fired. Says it is a mid-size but compact. So what the hell is it? What mags does it use? I can't believe Ruger would come up with another proprietary mags/gun since they already have the SR9 and American (and compact versions) in the pipeline. So how does it compare to those two lines in regard to size?

Interesting, because as Ruger desperately attempts to encroach on Glock's near monopoly, they're releasing new plastic guns, when the previous ones still could cover the market just fine, if they somehow could overcome their lack of acceptance.
Personally, I think the American was the most perfect attempt at a Glock competitor, but it has not received much acceptance or discussion. Will this Security 9 be the final big winner?

Quick look at the various spec sheets, in height and length, this is smack dab in between the Ruger American and RAP compact (and exactly the same as the M&P 2.0 Compact). 15 round capacity. Just barely over 1" thick (1.02"), compared to, for example, 1.27" for the SR9 and 1.05" for the RAP.
So, it's thin, has 15-round capacity, and is in between the full size and (sub)compact.
It's a Ruger 19. Just the right size.
Edited again to add: The MSRP on this thing is $379!! Street price is going to be what, then? Certainly sub-$300. With 9E's at CDNN for $249 this weekend, how low can they go?

I woke up and seen the email on the Security 9. Interesting firearm. Looks like it will be well priced and comes with two mags. Not that I need another but I will be checking one out at some point.

And I just bought the LCPII as a gift and to think for the price I could have the 9 with two mags, oh well.

I'm a Ruger fan, but this totally looks like an answer in search of a question. The S&W SD9 has about the same real world price and is stainless, comes with two mags, and benefits from over 20 years of company experience with the Sigma and M&P series. I was really hoping the new Security series would be some updated P guns. If this gun makes you happy that's great, I would never bash somebody for what they like. I just can't find a single thing about the new Security 9 that appeals to me or is an obvious advantage over other guns already available, particularly the SD9 and Ruger's own E variant of the SR9.

Hammer fired semi-autos seem to be making a comeback. First the Springfield XD-E and now the Ruger Security 9. My only "complaint" about the Security 9 is the single sided safety. The SR-series all have ambidextrous safeties.

From what I read in the O.P. I believe it is Single Action. The description said it feels like a good striker fired trigger. The Ruger American Pistol is also Single Action. I think the hammer would be pre-cocked. This is probably why it has a thumb safety. Of course I could be wrong.

No, the thumb safety is just to meet legal requirements for sale in some states requiring a manual safety. It's nice but not essential. The trigger blade and hammer block are the major internal and passive safeties.Mike J said:

Looking at the stats for 2016, the number one is Smith with over 1.26 million. Number two is Ruger with just over a million. Glock is number three with a tad over a quarter million.
If Ruger is looking to encroach on anyone's territory, it is Smith.
FWIW, in 2016 the number one US manufacturer of both long and short guns was Ruger.

Quiet a bit slimmer than both the Security 9 and RAP 9.
I believe that the Ruger Security 9 is designed to compete against the Smith & Wesson SD9 market but edge it out with it's Glock 19 size.

I have a RAPC9 and want to get a RAP9 to go with it, but this new RS9 has the exact specifications I want, except for the aluminum chassis. The aluminum rails on the RS9 can't be as strong as the RAP's steel, but I have never had a Ruger fail me. Does anyone have any experience with a high round count light weight 1911 Commander?
