Ruger P94

Quick Question for you guys. I'm new to handling guns and even newer to semiauto pistols. I recently bought a used Ruger P94. My father-in-law was cleaning it and looking it over when he posed this question to me.... He says that whenever he cocks the hammer back and puts the safety on, he's still able to pull the trigger and the hammer drops. He's also able to make it drop when he slides the barrel. Is this normal? Any thoughts or suggestions on how to repair if it's not would be appreciated.

When the safety is applied the gun should decock & the hammer be down..

Look at the spot where the hammer hits when it falls, you'll see a rectangular object which is the rear end of the firing pin. When the safety is engaged, it should recede into the slide just enough so the hammer can't hit it.

My P94 moves the pin and drops the hammer when i move the safety on, but that's not always the case in every P94 design (some were decock only safeties?)

Pancho I was able to get my P944 (.40 caliber P94) to duplicate what you describe if I did not put my safety on fully. If you push the safety/decocker lever down most of the way but not fully it does not engage the bar underneath it on the left side of the pistol & the hammer is still back and will fall if the trigger is pulled. If you push it down just a little further the hammer will fall. The pistol will be decocked. The safety/decocker lever just needs to be pushed down a little further.
