Not knowing much about them I declined buying a SS Old Army last week. Never fired.. It didn't have adj sights. If it had I probably would have bought it

I believe Bill Ruger Sr. said that he wanted to build the best black powder revolver ever made. I think he succeeded. The Old Army is built tough, like a tank. It can stand with most any modern revolver made today.

I occasionally swap out the cylinder and shoot some 45 colt medium warmish cartridge loads as well.

The Old Army just scratches my itch for the history of black powder a little better than the replicas, which are nice for the price. The Old Army just seems to keep getting more expensive with each passing day. Hard to go wrong.

The fixed sight one is the most desirable especially the 5 1/2" barrel. They are used in SASS and were made for very few years compared to the adj. sight model.
I have a couple.

I have a blued ROA with fixed sight. They aren’t very robust IMO. I bent the charging handle using it to load. So now I load the cylinder out of the gun.

I have never in all my years ever heard of anyone bending a Old Army handle! The Old Army charging handle is way more robust than any of the replica guns.

These are very strong. Bill Ruger and another man, tested these with Bullseye powder. It’s in Wilson’s book. Opened the nipples, filled cylinder with 40? 45 grains of powder. Held up! Same barrel as a .45 BH.

Gramps,
Sorry to here that. Ruger recommends .457 pure lead balls, but I found those a little hard to load and I use a press with the cyl. out of the frame. I started using .454 balls with no problem and much easier to load.
This makes life much more livable and makes shooting the OAs a lot more fun. Load and cap out of the frame. :)
