Ruger No3 22 Hornet scope problem

Help Support Ruger Forum:

I freely admit I am NOT a rifle guy but …. Are these things more complicated that required or something I just don't understand?
Most rifles have the scope bases mounted to the receiver. The No3 mounts to the barrel and the barrel is tapered so the mounts have to compensate for the taper of the barrel. If Ruger was selling a product that was actually intended for this rifle then it would not be at all complicated. When I spoke to Ruger customer service yesterday they told me that the rifle in question was discontinued years ago, they no longer serviced these rifles and there was no one still working there that had been around long enough to help me. I have always had great customer service from Ruger in the past but this time it seem like they just didn't want to get involved even though it is their rifle and their bases in Ruger logo'd packaging. Go figure.

Yeah, they list on their web site the guns they don't service any longer. Some they may provide "partial" service for though.

Numrich lists a "tall front scope mount" for the no. 3 carbine. In their photos it certainly looks taller than the 1v mounts but it's hard to tell. I'm interested in your solution as I own a few of the no. 3 carbines myself…

In Numrich it's listed in the "NI" or not illustrated section of their schematic/parts list. Hopefully it might help you out.

As an after-thought, here's a tidbit of advice based on my past experiences: When mounting ANY scope, check that either the bases are level (and level with the bore) by using a straightedge or in those cases where the factory OEM calls for different height rings, check the height of the rings when mounted on the bases by same method. Doing this initially will decrease problems later.

Won't fix the Ruger base and ring issue but I have a set of Weaver bases that came off a #3 and were replaced with the Ruger OEM bases and rings. If you want to try them you'll need Weaver style rings but at least you can get the rifle shooting. Pm me your address and I'll mail them out no charge.

FWIW I've had three of the #3s and have not had issues with the Ruger bases and rings.

Here are the catalog numbers right off a Ruger bubble pack SC-24 bases #3 and SC-24V bases #1v they were sold in sets

Here are the ones I use. They say anywhere you look on the net that they fit both. Unfortunately they are all that are still on the market from Ruger.

Yep …. Directly from Ruger's own web site.

Part # SC24VA-A
Note: this scope base fits the No. 1 Varminter and No. 3 rifles only. Does not fit the No. 1B rifle.

I have the Weaver bases on my #3, they came on the rifle. Using Burris rings, works great

I have a 1" aluminum dowel and a 30mm for scope work. Makes turning in dovetail rings easy and much better for the scope.
Also come in very handy when alignment issues need solving.
Just from the original picture the scope appears to be angled down towards the muzzle end. One ring is not correct.

Yep. I have the Wheeler scope alignment tool. Believe it or not the alignment is fine. It is just the angle that is off. Also lapped the rings with the Wheeler lapping tool. Didn't do anything to resolve the issue though.

I have a similar problem with a #3 in 22H, but you are way ahead of me!
Mine came with a copper shim under the front scope mount which was not a Ruger mount.
I picked it up when I returned from Desert Storm and Ruger told me the early #3 did not have Ruger scope mounts which fit.
I wouldn't mind trying leftover parts to try and find something that does work.

I once had a hell of a time with a Winchester USRAC M94 XTR AE in 7-30 Waters. The gun was truly beautiful with a 24" bbl, deep blue, cut checkering and I wanted a really clean ring and base setup to compliment the rifle.
I had 2 readily available choices; all steel Redfield or Weaver tip-off rings and bases.
I went with the Redfield and quickly regretted it. My friend who happened to be the head gunsmith where I purchased the gun had 2 additional Redfield setups, all 3 had the same issue.
Someone somewhere at Redfield must have had the wrong dimensions given them when they drew up the CAD program for machining the bases.
Every one held the scope on a slightly less than parallel plane than the bbl.
Kinda disgusted I swapped my Redfield rings and base for the Weaver setup and bingo, the problem was solved.
I guess my point is……. if your No.3 has the original bbl is there an alternate base and ring setup available for it.
Anything can happen, maybe the base is indeed, machined incorrectly?

I received a set of Weaver bases from another member and problem solved. Someone at Ruger dropped the ball on this one but that is fine. I am still a big Ruger nut so I will let it slide.

Absolutely, I have plenty of Rugers too.
I also wouldn't be surprised if some accessories are outsourced.

Weaver #85 and #86 with a note saying the front base may need to be modified and back base may need to be shimmed for perfect alignment I have these on two #3s and they work just fine right out of the package maybe im just lucky

I have a 77 6mm with the receiver machined for Ruger rings that I had to add about .010" shim under the front scope ring, it happens.
