Ruger No.1 38-55

Just had to brag . Finally found one , mint condition , nice wood .
Reasonable price (way less than any new one).
Any body shoot cast bullets in their 38-55 ?
Sorry just had to tell someone as the wife thinks it's just a gun .

I recall that my cast bullet guy told me that the chambering on that Sloan's East (Woody Walser) was not friendly to cast bullets......"short" factory chambers was noted in that long ago 30 year old conversation after he purchased the rifle from my inventory. Other calibers from the Ruger Sloan contract were the #1S in 218 Bee, 300 H&H........all red pad limited runs.... 8)

Great find. I believe the old time standard was a 250- 260 grain cast bullet sized to your groove diameter. You might find Starline's 38-55 short brass useful. They make the standard brass too.
I bet you could load some 375 Win level ammo in the Ruger.

I have a new bullet mold coming from Accurate Molds . Should work perfect in the No.1 . It is a 250 g. mold .
I have 3 BPCR in 38-55 but this will be my dedicated smokeless rifle .
Will keep you posted when the mold comes in .

Mine shoots very well with either Lyman or RCBS cast bullets from wheel weights, sized .379 over imr 3031 .

Regular 38x55 cases.

Thanks for the info . 3031 and 5744 are the first 2 powders I will try .
I got the accurate mold coming and I have the .379 sizing dies .
Will report in with the progress

I bought 3 of those in the early 90s NIB from a local Dealer $550 for the first 2 then he said he had to get $600 for the last one!

In fact, you can shoot 375 Win. ammunition in this rifle; I have done it. But there's really no reason to. If you have new 38-55 brass, you can load it up about as hot as you want. Though I always shoot mine with reduced or SAAMI pressure loads.
Since acquiring a couple of highwall clones in 38-55, I have been neglecting the Ruger 1S. I need to remedy that this winter.

I have the opposite problem in that I have a Lonestar Rolling Block and a Shiloh Sharps as well as aHepburn .
Only use black powder in them , always wanted a dedicated smokeless rifle and this one fits that .
Anxious to give it a go this winter , have 3 different bullet molds to try in it .

well , took it out Sunday . Shot an Accurate molds 250g. bullet .
Tried both 5744 and 3031 .
Best 5744 group was 5/8" . Best 3031 group was 3/8" .
5 shots off a bench with rest .
Man this gun is fun !
