Hey guys, new to the forum. Just picked up a nice Mk 1 S/N prefix 17-31XXX, 1982. I want to try to buy the correct box for it but have seen yellow and red boxes; 2 piece and folding lid. Can a Mk 1 collector steer me in the right path with perhaps a pic or 2. Ebay has acouple on but I am not sure. Regards, Vanski

Welcome to the Forum!
I'm not 100% sure,,, but I believe you need to look for a red & white, one piece, hinged lid type of box.

In 1954, Ruger first introduced the "two-piece" box, but I'll be danged if I can remember if it was the red, with white background & black eagle logo, variety. They also had a yellow box with the red bird surrounded by a black wreath with a ribbon on the bottom of the wreath. Is that what they are now offering on ebay?

RENE states that the Red Hinged Box was used up to serial number 16-77799. So if your gun is 17-xxxxx then it should be the yellow and black hinged box. I know you said it was a MK-I but if it has a 4 3/4 in bl. then the box label should read RST4. If it has a 6 in. bl. then the label should read RST6. If it has a 5 1/2 In. Bull Bl. then the label should read T-512. If it has a 6 7/8 in. bl. then the label should read T-678. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, I forgot to mention that it is the 5 1/2" bull barrel. I really appreciate the feedback. Would like to put her in the right box as I will give this one to my daughter (she don't know it yet!) If you guys have a an extra box you would sell please let me know. The black and yellow hinged box seems right to me also. What does RENE stand for? Please exscuse the newbie questions! Regards to all. Vanski in S. Fl.

This box too old?

Yes! That box is much too old. Plus that box is for the Standard Model with a 6 in. bl. What he needs is a box for a MK-I Bull Barrel, model number "T512".

Thanks guys, just had some surgery so been away from the pc. Yes that box is on ebay now but much too old; but thanks for your time replying. Still keeping my eyes open. Regards to all.

Check Ebay again...there's one on page 4...5 1/2 Bull Barrel...not smart enough on the computer to pull it up.

Here you go: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RUGER-22-L-RIFLE-BULL-BARREL-TARGET-PISTOL-BOX-EMPTY-5-1-2-BBL/111439413468?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D24902%26meid%3D9868da0d97b94c1684f162cf18c62f12%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D10502%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D111439413468

If you look at this box you will see it the Red one with white letters. What one needs for a 17-XXXXX, MK-I, 5 1/2 Bull bl. is the yellow and black hinged lid box. Read my first post.

Vanski, greetings and welcome to the forum,,,what 'street' noted above is correct, your gun needs the yellow/black (one piece) hinged box,,,the red/white ones were used only up to the late 16-80000 or so range, this info can be found in the Hiddleson book "Encyclopedia of Ruger-Semi AutoRimfire Pistols 1949-1992"
I believe it is pages 219-220.......
Good luck and the box you need should be in the $20-30 range tops ( yes I know there can be shipping or taxes, whatever)

here is the only picture I have.........

Thanks rugerguy for posting a picture of the correct type box. Even though the Red box with the hinged lid with white lettering has the correct label on it, that doesn't make it "period correct" for that MK-I. The box that you show is the "PERIOD CORRECT" box for that gun with the serial number 17-31XXX.
