I'm thinking seriously about making a Mini 30 my next gun. I don't have a proper hunting rifle, but would like to, in addition to a defensive weapon. I prefer a round larger than the .556 in the Mini 14 and would like an 18+" barrel.
I searched the forum, but there's not much current info on them.
Are the current models still as awesome as they appear?
Thanks.

As I see it, the problem with using a Mini-30 as one's main hunting/self defense rifle is two-fold....(1) Quality brass 7.62X39 ammo is expensive, and that part gets even worse if there's any sort of serious stock piling in the cards....(2) You are at the mercy of Ruger's corporate whims for spare parts and mags. Yeah, there's other sources for some of the stuff you might want to tuck away, but the quality of most after-market items is usually lacking....But hey, if you're well heeled and don't mind spending upwards of $3,000 for a rifle, a dozen or so factory mags, a few spare parts and a couple cases of ammo, why not?....After all, it IS a fairly good gun. And it's a heck of a lot of fun to shoot.
