I handled the 44 , action was smooth but the trigger was a little on the heavy side

"That's double what I'd give for a fake Marlin."

Who's making fake Marlins?

All big companies that have been around for decades have changed ownership since the beginning. Nobody who started Marlin is still around,, much less involved in running the business.

At least Ruger has stepped in & from what I've seen of the Marlin line NOW,, is they improved the products.

The Marlins being produced by Ruger are excellent rifles and as good as any Marlin made. I own a current production 1894 and am immensely pleased with it. You cannot buy a decent rifle anymore for under $1000 and lever-actions are comparatively expensive to produce. That’s just the way it is.

I am planning on picking up the 1894 in .357, when available. They look great, and as you stated, the reviews so far are good.

I own a couple of older Marlins,, (pre Remington by a few decades,) and I've handled several of the new Ruger built ones. I've only fired one so far.
And I stick by my earlier comment;
"from what I've seen of the Marlin line NOW,, is they improved the products."

And one of these days,, I'll add a Ruger built Marlin to the stable.

Ruger is. Never said they were bad guns, they're just not Marlins. They're copies of Marlins made by Ruger with the Marlin name on them. Some people prefer Willys over Jeep.

I paid half that for all four of my lever guns (one I fixed up and sold for more than $1K) so I am not sure I understand. In fact, I don't have a bad rifle and didn't pay anywhere near $1K for any of them. Could I sell my Waffle Top/Redfield combo for that? Maybe. My Peanut 39A with a Redfield? Probably not.

I don't buy new guns anyway so a new 1894 would have to be $500 for me to even look at it ... and the 1892 is a stronger and lighter gun anyway. Know what they say about opinions.
