I was wondering what I should look for I am looking at trading for it tommorow. I have a newer one in 300 win but this 3 digit serial number has my attention. I heard the very early ones had barrels that were not so good. Not really interested in doing much shooting with it just curious of your opinions on the very early model 77's.

You are buying it for the serial#, not the barrel! Even so, this should be a Douglas barrel, not one of which so many bad rumors float around about. It should have a round edge Mershon pad and have a straight stock; that is, not cut at the right side at the bolt. You did not say if it has sights or not, but it should have early rings. Good luck with this rifle, but sounds like you are not very familiar with M77's of this vintage. There is more to know about than I can tell in a Forum post; you need a copy of the Ronnie Burke M77 book!

Ruger used Douglas barrels until about 1973 and transitioned to Wilson barrels. There were some quality control issues with the Wilsons. Some were very good barrels; some were not.
A three-digit rifle will be a 1968 production.
And as ENO said, please tell us the caliber and whether or not is has sights.
Well I picked it up today it has a shorter barrel than my newer 300 win mag I assume 22" the bolt is serialized to the gun here is a link to the add he posted with some pictures.

I looked at the pics and the rifle is as expected. No cutout for the ejection port and looks like it has the right pad.

You got a really nice rifle there. The rings are later, with the small hole. No big deal, as they work fine. Might want to be on the look out for some early M77 rings with the big hole.

I have a list around here somewhere that lists the Harvey Reed Grele collection of #250's that included a lot of older models. I have a hunch that one was probably on there.

That would be interesting to know he says he has the original reciept from a gunshop in california from when his grandfather bought it he said he has to dig around to find it again. Apparently his grandfather must have recently passed and he got his guns. He said he will be in contact when he finds it again.
